    The Urban Team at the Division of Data, Research and Policy in UNICEF is looking for an intern to develop a portfolio of 10 good practice case studies of initiatives in urban areas for the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) and contribute with developing of content for the Child Friendly Cities website.

    Urbanization is a defining trend of our times. More than half of humanity (55 per cent) currently lives in urban areas – a figure that will edge close to 70 per cent by the middle of the century. For children, urbanization poses among the greatest risks and opportunities to realizing their rights, and having a fair chance at life. 

    UNICEF has recognized urbanization as an area of evolving importance for the organization and developed a global urban strategy to guide and scale up the organization’s work in urban areas at the global, national and local levels. 

    One aspect of the strategy is to improve and expand knowledge exchange of good practices and lessons learned, as well as tools that will facilitate this work. An important element of this knowledge exchange is revamping and updating the Child Friendly Cities website, the information hub for the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) and the information therein. This includes developing a portfolio of 10 good practice case studies of initiatives in urban areas for the website. 
     Under the guidance of the Chief, Sustainability and Policy Action Unit and the urban team at the Division of Data, Research and Policy in UNICEF, the intern will develop a portfolio of 10 good practice case studies of initiatives in urban areas for the CFCI website.     Purpose of the Position
    Under the guidance and supervision of the Representative, establishes and implements field office emergency preparedness and response. Responsible for the development, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the emergency interventions in the concerned areas to ensure the survival and well-being of children and mothers, and the affected communities in an emergency situation with emphasis on strengthening development and resilience.
    Key Expected Results
    Emergency Preparedness
    • Adopts adequate emergency preparedness measures through the development and updating of field contingency plans and establishment of early warning mechanisms, to ensure effective preparedness and response to specific emergencies.
    • Participates in the formulation and development of plans of action in preparation and response to emergencies, monitors compliance of all sectors with field emergency plans of action, including financial resources. Ensures coordination of the management of emergency preparedness and response at local level.
    • Provides technical advice related to emergency preparedness and response, including on programme management related issues. Provides advice to the country office in the implementation of emergency preparedness measures in the field to strengthen preparedness and response mechanisms in the country faced with impending emergencies.
    • Develops and maintains databases on regional information, and ensure the flow of information and communication crucial for the planning and implementation of emergency preparedness and response management. Identifies availability of resources in emergency prone areas and establish logistics plans to be implemented during an emergency operation, to ensure a timely and effective emergency response.
    • Plans, organizes and conducts training for the office staff capacity building in emergencies preparedness and response. Assists in developing and conducting emergency training courses. Provides training and/or briefing, as required. Participates in other emergency training workshops in the region, and builds up the emergency preparedness and response capability of UNICEF staff as well as implementing partners.
    Emergency Response
    • Establish UNICEF's continuous presence in an intersectorial basis and implement the operational tasks relating to emergency assistance. Constantly verifies the nature and extend of the emergency with staff, government officials, other UN agencies or local organizations and media. Ensures that the office is provided with effective telecommunications facility and staff security assistance in an emergency, as necessary. In coordination with the programme and operations groups, establishes contact with all UNICEF staff, their dependants and visitors to ensure their safety and whereabouts, and informs the Representative, the management and the security team of their status.
    • Participates and assists with assessment of local emergency and security situation affecting children and mothers in the locality, in conjunction with the Country Office, and field staff. Visits the location to conduct a rough assessment of the magnitude of the crisis and its implications for children and its impact on the community. Assesses the validity of the office preparedness plan and ability of the office vis-à-vis the current crisis as well as immediate and additional needs. Determines corporate priorities and an appropriate intervention (supply procurement, fund-raising and staff development) by UNICEF. Coordinates with other partners to make, if required, a rapid assessment covering priority areas as defined by the Core Commitment for Children in Emergencies. Establishes contact with community groups, government, UN agencies, media and other partners to keep abreast of emergency situations.
    • Applies the emergency preparedness and response plan as necessary, and identifies urgent staffing requirements and proposes to the management to redeploy country office staff as required. Executes the timely delivery of assistance and procurement of supplies, monitors the appropriate and effective use of UNICEF resources/inputs. Iidentifies problems and constraints in order to ensure effective project delivery. Certifies the disbursement of funds, monitors expenditures and submits financial status reports. Sets up a reporting system and sends daily situation reports to concerned parties.
    Emergency Project
    • Responsible of the team present in the field, participates in the implementation of plans of action and workplans for emergency projects. Implements and manages project activities. Undertakes frequent field visits to emergency project areas, to assess local conditions and monitor project progress. Makes technical decisions on project administration (e.g., activates, requests or reprogrammes allocation of emergency funds). Prepares inputs for appeals and updates related to emergencies. Works with program sections and senior management to mobilize donor response and recovery/rehabilitation-related funding, including annual or multi-annual humanitarian appeals and documents (e.g., pitch documents). Communicates and advocates on the situation and needs of children through local and international media, as appropriate.
    • Identifies longer-term requirements of the emergency operation/interventions.
    • Maintains at local level continuous, effective and coordination of UNICEF sectors, communication, consultation and liaison with Government, UN agencies, NGOs, donors and allies to appeal for aid for children and women with special needs resulting from the emergency situation requiring an effective emergency response in all sectors. Identifies implementing/operational partners and establishes implementing arrangements. Ensures that the UNICEF support is effectively provided to the government with respect to sectoral coordination within the framework of the sector coordination approach and based on the Core Commitment for Children.
    • Participates in all humanitarian and recovery related forum and keeps management informed of all humanitarian developments in the field in terms of policies, strategy, situation developments, potential threats and opportunities/issues in partnership.
    • Promotes that disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness and response strategies are mainstreamed in the country office workplans. Prepares sectoral input for the country programme documents, plan of action, annual work plans, and all related documents of the office's Emergency Preparedness and Response. Contributes towards the preparation of the Situation Analysis and the Country Programme Document.
    Qualifications of Successful Candidate
    1.Education
    • Advanced University degree in one of the following fields: social sciences, public administration, international law, public health, nutrition, international relations, business administration or other related disciplines.

    2.Work Experience

    Purpose of the Position
    The Private Sector Fundraising (PSFR) section within PFP works with National Committees and UNICEF country offices to maximize income and drive income growth. There are five units within the PSFR section. The purpose of the Market Development team is to grow income from National Committees. The Unit will achieve this by working with National Committees to set and implement national PSFR plans in alignment with global strategies. The Unit will ensure UNICEF`s support to, and investment in, National Committees is prioritized so that income growth is optimized and all Committees receive a core level of support from UNICEF. This post works with the Chief of Market Development to help maximize private sector income from the largest and most important National Committees, in particular working with them to help develop the right fundraising strategies and plans for their market conditions. The post holder will help ensure that global best practice is effectively implemented in the specified National Committees.     Qualifications of Successful Candidate

    - Work Experience: Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience with fundraising and management responsibility in a leading non-profit organization. Preference will be given to candidates with international fundraising experience and those with experience as a Fundraising/Marketing Manager with responsibility for significant (i.e. multi-million $) annual income targets and expenditure budgets and for a broad fundraising portfolio i.e. multiple income channels including pledge, corporate, legacies, major donors, and foundations. Knowledge of the UN system is an advantage.

    Purpose of the Position
    On behalf of the IASC Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan and UNICEF as the lead agency for the IASC Nutrition Cluster and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Nutrition Cluster Coordinator will facilitate a timely and effective nutrition response in Afghanistan and ensure that the capacity of national institutions is strengthened to respond to and coordinate emergency nutrition interventions that demonstrate results and impact achieved.
    Key Expected Results
    General activities:
    1. Identification of key partners: -Continuously identify key humanitarian partners for the Nutrition Cluster response, respecting their respective mandates and program priorities -Continuously identify other key partners including national and Sub-National authorities, private sector, etc. -Carryout and update capacity mapping of all current and potential actors - government, national and international humanitarian organizations as well as national institutions, the private sector and advocate to donors, NGOs, government and other stakeholder on the nutrition programme needs and services. -Monitor Community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) activities to ensure that cluster members are adhering to national and international best practice documents. -Monitor and document Infant and young child feeding best practices and lessons learned
    2. Establishment and maintenance of appropriate humanitarian coordination mechanisms: -Ensure appropriate coordination between all Nutrition humanitarian partners (including OCHA, national and international NGOs, the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement, IOM and other international organizations active in the sector) as well as Sub-National authorities and local structures -Ensure the establishment/ and maintenance of appropriate sector coordination mechanisms including working groups as needed; -Ensure full integration of the IASSCs agreed priority cross-cutting issues, namely human rights, age, gender and environment, utilization participatory and community-based approaches. In line with this, promote gender equality by ensuring that the needs, contributions and capacities of women and girls as well as men and boys are addressed; -Secure commitments from cluster participants in responding to needs and filling gaps, ensuring an appropriate distribution of responsibilities within the cluster, with clearly defined focal points for specific issues where necessary; -Ensure that cluster participants work collectively, ensuring the complementarities of the various stake holders actions; -Promote emergency response actions while at the same time considering the need for early recovery planning as well as prevention and risk reduction concerns; -Ensure effective links with other clusters, especially Health, WASH, Agriculture and Food Security and Education; -Represent the interests of the Nutrition Cluster in discussions with the Humanitarian Coordinator, the head of OCHA as well as donors on prioritization, resource mobilization and advocacy; -Act as focal point for inquiries on the Nutrition Clusters response plans and operations.
    3. Planning and strategy development: -Ensure predictable action within the cluster for the following; -Needs assessment and analysis; development of standard assessment formats for use within the sector; -Identification of gaps; -Developing/updating agreed response strategies and action plans for the Nutrition Cluster and ensuring that these are adequately reflected in the overall country strategies, such as the Common Humanitarian Action Plan (CHAP) as an integral component of the CAP process. -Drawing lessons learned from past activities and revising strategies and action plans accordingly; -Developing an exit, or transition, strategy for the cluster
    . 4. Application of standards: -Ensure that Nutrition Cluster participants are aware of relevant policy guidelines, technical standards and relevant commitments that the Government/concerned authorities have undertaken under international human rights law; -Ensure that the Nutrition Cluster responses are in line with existing policy guidance, technical standards, and relevant Government human rights legal obligations.
    5. Monitoring and reporting: -Specifically needs to include an analytical interpretation of best available information in order to benchmark progress of the emergency response over time. That is - monitoring indicators (quantity, quality, coverage, continuity and cost) of service delivery which are derived from working towards meeting standards (mentioned in point 4). -Ensure regular reporting against the Nutrition Cluster indicators of service delivery (quantity, quality, coverage, continuity and cost) supports analysis of the Nutrition Cluster in closing gaps and measuring impact of interventions. -Develop and coordinate implementation of a nutrition surveillance system based on relevant information from service delivery points (e.g. TFU, OTPs, etc), community based GMP, periodic surveys, and regular data from established sentinel sites. This would entail triangulation of nutrition data with data from the relevant sectors, eg. Heath, WASH and food security.
    6. Advocacy and resource mobilization: -Identify core advocacy concerns, including resource requirements, and contribute key messages to broader advocacy initiatives of the Humanitarian Coordinators and other actors; -Advocate for donors to fund cluster participants to carry out priority activities in the sector concerned, while at the same time encouraging cluster participants to mobilize resources for their activities through the usual channels. -Act as the focal point for reviewing and ensuring quality control for all the Nutrition Cluster project submitted for Flash Appeal, CAP, CERF and other funding mechanisms
    7. Training and capacity building of Sub-National /local authorities and civil society: -Promote and support training of the Nutrition Cluster partners personnel and build the capacity of all the Nutrition partners based on the mapping and understanding of available capacity; -Support efforts to strengthen the capacity of the national / authorities and civil society.
    8. Acting as Provider of last resort: As agreed by the IASC Principals, the Nutrition Cluster lead agency is responsible for acting as the provider of last resort to meet agreed priority needs and will be supported by the HC in their resource mobilization efforts in this regard;
    -Under the principal of the Provider of last resort, the Nutrition Cluster Coordinator will liaise with the Cluster Lead Agency UNICEF to ensure that gaps are filled
    Qualifications of Successful Candidate Education Advanced University degree in any of the following fields: Public Health, Nutrition or a related technical field
    A first university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of advanced university degree Work Experience Minimum of eight years with significant experience working in emergency contexts preferably UN or NGO experience at a senior programme management level.     Purpose of the Position
    Under the supervision of the ICT Specialist and head of the ICT4D section, the Technology Officer in the medium size office is expected to identify emerging technologies and support their scale-up and adaptation, with a view to improve the implementation, management and monitoring of the UNICEF programme in Burundi.
    Key Expected Results
    1. The use of technology to strengthen and support field operations programming, surveillance, monitoring and evaluation, advocacy and communication/media work.
    2. The applications' interface design, testing and the training of end users in the Country Programme on RapidSMS and allied applications covering programmatic areas of health/nutrition, food security, water and sanitation, child protection, emergency response, supply and communication.
    3.     4. Day to day guidance of a proactive and action-oriented T4D working group based on a joined innovation work plan, representing all key UNICEF sections and stakeholders, with a clearly defined vision and capacity to provide technical and programmatic direction and support.
    5. Identifying, working with and coordinating technical and programmatic project partners by assessing project needs and develop a strategy that seeks to meet immediate UNICEF programmatic demands while building in-country technical project partner capacity.
    6. Work with open-source development communities, local innovators, youth organizations, cultural and religious organizations, NGOs, the private sector, local media and academia to provide a space to nurture and test new and innovative ideas develop the next generation of thought leaders and build local capacity. 7.     Qualifications of Successful Candidate
    - A first-level university degree (Bachelor's) in Computer Science, Information Science, Business Administration, Engineering, Industrial Design or a directly-related technical field(s) is required.
    - A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience, at the national and international levels, in the use of technology for development is required.
    - Prior experience in the deployment, management and utilization of technology solutions to address programs and operational needs is required.
    - Prior experience in managing relationships with a broad spectrum of partners, such as youth coalitions, universities, intellectual leaders, UN organizations, NGOs and the private sector is considered highly desirable.

    Purpose of the Position
    The main purpose of the post is to strengthen the contribution of the evaluation function to the operational, strategic and policy levels through the conduct of agency specific and interagency evaluations of humanitarian actions. The purpose of the post extends beyond the conduct of evaluations to the entire range of actions to stimulate corporate utilization of the results at the policy, strategy, and operational levels. The Senior Evaluation Specialist, Humanitarian is responsible to conduct evaluations that include sectoral evaluations in emergency situations in areas such as health, water and sanitation and hygiene, nutrition, education and child protection. The Senior Evaluation Specialist will be the central focal point for evaluation of humanitarian action, s/he will ensure liaison with HQ divisions, regional offices and country offices as well as with UN agencies, NGOs, donors and other partners. The Senior Evaluation Specialist will contribute to the development of standards, methods and skills related to the evaluation of humanitarian action throughout UNICEF. The Senior Evaluation Specialist functions under the general direction and supervision of the Director, Evaluation Office.
    Key Expected Results
    1. Provide leadership, guidance and direction for overall strategy development for humanitarian evaluations conducted by UNICEF and / or in cooperation with the UN and other partners covering emergency preparedness, humanitarian response, early recovery, rehabilitation, reconstruction, and transition to development.
    2. Manage independent humanitarian evaluations for UNICEF and / or in the inter-agency context, including preparation of TOR, designing and framing the evaluation questions, selection and supervision of consultants, managing the evaluation as per the standards, norms and codes set by UNEG, ALNAP and other relevant bodies, ensuring quality of the final reports, communicating the evaluation findings and recommendations.
