Organizational Setting and Reporting
The Career Support Unit under the Department of Field Support/Field Personnel Division seeks a computer programmer or data analyst to collect and analyze data to improve succession planning for senior positions under the management track in United Nations Peacekeeping Missions and to support the development of more effective methods to attract and retain qualified candidates for such senior leadership positions.
The period of the internship is for four months with an opportunity for extension up to six months, pending the needs of the department.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
- Under the guidance of a supervisor, the intern would collect and analyse data to provide a framework for (a) building capacity of mission senior staff and (b) ensuring the continuity of leadership in management positions.
- Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- collecting and managing data to benchmark a diverse pool of candidates against a set of skills and other prerequisites built for the senior management track;
- collecting data for senior management position management,
- designing surveys, conducting hypothesis testing, and identifying trends, patterns and causal relationships in data sets, and preparing summary reports;
- supporting Career Support Unit staff in analysing data from various sources, mapping career-path events to their corresponding likelihoods;
- supporting data-mining and analysis of succession indicators;
- supporting research and quantitative analysis of indicators for the monitoring of succession management;
- assisting Career Support Unit staff in visualizing and validating data through graphs and maps;
- assisting in the drafting of materials based on quantitative research and analysis;
- undertaking other tasks as requested.
- The Career Development Unit strives to offer interns an opportunity to work independently with substantive issues while also assisting colleagues in the day-today operations of the office.

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the
programme. Familiarity with a statistical platform such as SAS, SPSS, or R and familiarity with databases and business intelligence tools including data visualization tools, such as Gephi or Matlab, is am advantage. Proficient knowledge of Excel is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in English or French, (both oral and written) is required; Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
