Organizational Setting and Reporting
These two positions are located in the Editorial Control Section (ECS) of the Editorial, Terminology and Reference Service (ETRS) of the Documentation Division of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. The incumbents are under the general supervision of the Chief of ETRS and the immediate supervision of the Chief of ECS.
Responsibilities
  • The Editor is entrusted with the following responsibilities:
  • Edits complex or politically sensitive material, normally without revision, to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
  • Carries out more extensive editing where required, including rewriting, abridging and restructuring texts for greater readability and better logical sequence.
  • Consults with author departments and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors.
  • Assists in drawing up editorial guidelines for dissemination system-wide.
  • Serves as focal point for specific categories of documents.
  • With other Editors and Senior Editors, acts on a rotating basis as programming officer.
  • Assists Senior Editors in regulating the quality of the work of the Section and in
  • establishing editorial policy; in implementing Departmental policies that affect editing, with
  • special emphasis on electronic processing and author assistance/outreach; and in training
  • junior and/or short-term Editors and revising their work.
  • Assists staff of substantive units and delegations in drafting documents and provides advice on matters concerning editorial policy and practice.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A first level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for English Editors or, for candidates appointed to an editorial post in 2005 or earlier, the Examination for English Translators or the Examination for English Verbatim Reporters.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience in editing, including three years of experience in editing within the United Nations.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the post advertised, perfect command of English, which must be the candidate's main language, is required, as well as excellent knowledge of at least two other official languages of the United Nations. Assessment Method Evaluation of qualified applicants may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
