Since 1989, the Women's Refugee Commission has advocated vigorously for laws, policies and programs to improve the lives and protect the rights of refugee and displaced women, children and young people—bringing about lasting, measurable change.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Intern will support the project, 'Building Adolescent, Reintegrating Families and Mitigating Risks in Emergency,' an initiative conducting desk and field research to strengthen livelihood interventions targeting affected women, men, female and male youth by ensuring that the economic activities are as safe as possible and to mitigate exposure to risk of sexual and gender based violence.

PRODUCTS AND ACTIVITIES

(will include some or all of the following):

• Conduct desk research and analysis on available evidence and lessons learned from innovative livelihoods programs, protection programs, and/or livelihoods programs with a protection focus, in emergency contexts.
• Support activities of the Women's Refugee Commission's networking groups.
• Attend meetings as a representative of the Women's Refugee Commission, taking notes and summarizing relevant information in written form.
• Contribute to a database of organizations and actors working on issues related to livelihoods in emergency contexts for advocacy, communications and networking purposes.
• Assist with administrative duties, including drafting letters, editing reports and other activities as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

• Excellent research, knowledge management, analysis and writing skills, with specific interest in emergencies, livelihoods, and gender analysis.
• Strong background in international relief and development, with knowledge and interest in livelihoods development in emergency contexts and transitions-to-work activities.
• Experience working in emergency relief or humanitarian activities and/or in developing countries a plus.
• Excellent communication and computer skills.
• Comfortable taking initiative and working with minimal supervision. Team player.
• Current graduate student.

Timeframe: October 1st – December 31st 2013, 20 hours/week

Remuneration: Unpaid, with no travel stipend for recruits outside New York
