Responsibilities
The Economics Department provides impact-driven economic analysis to support the EIB in its operations, its global positioning and strategy and policy definition, both inside and outside the EU. It comprises three divisions - Economic Studies, Country and Financial Sector Analysis and Policy and Strategy.
The EIB finances, jointly with EBRD and the World Bank, an enterprise survey currently fielded in ten MENA countries. A vast majority of these countries is undergoing momentous political, economic and social changes. Evidently, business activity is not immune to those changes and the survey results are a useful tool to assess their impact on investment and broad business decisions taken by entrepreneurs across the region. In addition to those shorter-term considerations, current business practices also reflect the legacy of state-led development models that have run their course. All these have contributed to the region's current economic woes, the most visible of which is perhaps the weak job creation and high unemployment rates - particularly acute among the youth.
The MENA Enterprise Survey 2012 will provide a characterisation of the business conditions prevailing in the region. The survey will enable at the same time the investigation of key research questions that may shed light on the most critical constraints surrounding economic development. Under the supervision of an economist the trainee's main task will be to handle and analyse data from the MENA Enterprise survey 2012.
