Immunization and Vaccine Development
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The objective of the programme is to contribute to the prevention and control of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD), with focus on measles elimination, rubella/congenital rubella syndrome control, the polio end-game, and elimination of maternal and neonataltetanus. To establish sustainable systems of (a) immunization that ensures access for all people to effective vaccination against disease of major public health importance; and (b) surveillance as an integral part of disease control initiatives. To promote vaccine quality assurance from production through delivery, including development of new vaccines.
Description of duties:
Under the overall guidance of Deputy Regional Director and supervision of Director, FHR, with specific guidance and priorities, policies and activities given by the Coordinator, Immunization and Vaccine Development, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:
1. Support countries in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of measles elimination and rubella/CRS control plans;
2. Develop /update regional guidelines on measles elimination and rubella/CRS control, including SIAs, case management and integrated Surveillance for Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP), measles and MNT and other vaccine preventable diseases (VPD).
3. Accelerate maternal and neonatal tetanus elimination (MNTE) activities in the Region to achieve regional elimination targets
4. Perform field level investigation of measles, MNTE and VPD surveillance and coordinate integration of surveillance at all levels;
5. Respond to outbreaks of measles in Member States and ensure an adequate investigation and response;
6. Coordinate and organize regional training meetings/workshops;
7. Provide technical advice and collaborate in immunization system strengthening team on improving routine immunization (RI) in high risk areas and integrate RI efforts with measles elimination strategies;
8. Assist with the provision of technical collaboration for research activities. Identify need for operational research and support research proposals.
9. Coordinate elaboration and monitoring of regional office and country work plans of relevant Expected Results
10. Liaise with implementing partners and donors to coordinate country support;
11. Perform other duties as assigned.
12. To submit an assignment report at the end of the assignment.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Essential: Medical degree and post graduate degree in Public Health or related field.
Desirable: Training in immunization related areas or communicable disease control.
Skills:
Functional Skills and Knowledge:
Extensive management and technical knowledge and skills in communicable disease epidemiology, especially vaccine preventable disease, excellent communication skills, experience and skills in data analysis, proposal development and project management, technical expertise in public health, disease control and immunization, ability to work effectively with colleagues at the national and international levels.

Other Skills (e.g. IT):
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office applications and computer skills for making high quality technical presentations including data analysis
Experience:
Essential:
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in area of immunization, including minimum of three years of international experience. Experience in national immunization program planning and evaluation.
Desirable:
  • Knowledge of planning and implementation of sustainable measles mortality reduction strategies would be desirable. Experience in disease surveillance and research
Languages:
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Knowledge of other UN languages is desirable
Annual salary:
(Net of tax)
USD 67, 483 at single rate
USD 72, 467 with primary dependants
Post Adjustment:
38.9 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
