Job: Legal Intern - Regional Office for Central America and Cuba, Panama City

The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has an international mandate to protect refugees, persons whom have fled their country of origin due to well founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or belonging to a particular social group. The UNHCR Regional Office for Central America, Mexico and Cuba (RO PAN) is located in Ciudad de Panama. The internship position will be supporting the UNHCR protection focal point for Central America and Cuba in the achievement of four strategic priorities: improvement of the asylum systems, enhancement of durable solutions, prevention and reduction of statelessness and strengthening strategic partnerships. Within these four areas, some of the main functions include developing tools, identification of good practices, workshops (both internal and external), and identification of protection needs.
The internship position provides an invaluable opportunity to gain first-hand experience in a dynamic and high caliber multicultural team on the sub-region's most recent trends and developments in refugee studies. It provides experience in the preparation of internal and external documents, as well as a window into the complexities that face asylum seekers in the Central America today.
Responsibilities:
  • Monitor and identify trends in forced displacement in the region through news sources and partner offices.
  • Legal analysis and research.
  • Draft and update documents in both English and Spanish.
  • Assist in logistics and preparations for workshops including preparation of materials, workshop activities and logistics.
  • Assist in other tasks performed by RO PAN including preparation of case studies, presentations and materials.
Requirements:
  • A University degree in Law or a related field in Social Sciences
  • Familiarity with and/ or interest in Refugee Law, Human Rights Law and International Law or related areas. Preference will be given to those familiar with refugee protection and mixed migration flows.
  • Excellent communication, organization, drafting skills.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish (oral and written).
  • Ability to conduct functions on computer programs such as Microsoft Office (including Excel y Power Point)
  • As the staff travels frequently, an ability to work independently, with little supervision and keep to task is essential
Terms and Conditions:
This position is voluntary and unpaid thus no type of remuneration or financial assistance will be offered to the person contracted. The organization does not offer any expectation of further employment to the intern after completing the internship. The volunteer must sign and comply with the contract agreement and the terms of the Code of Conduct as well as the Confidentiality Code of the UNHCR. Unless otherwise stated, the office hours are 8:30-4:30 Monday to Friday. The internship is open to persons of any nationality however, visas, if required, are the responsibility of the applicant.
Duration: 6 months.
Start date: January 20th, 2014
