This position is for a Provincial Fisheries officer stationed in Auki, Malaita to assist the Malaita Province Fisheries Division in delivering on their strategy and in supporting their partnership with the CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems led by WorldFish.
Reporting to the Chief Fisheries Officer(CFO) and co-supervised by WorldFish staff in the CGIAR Research Program on Aquatic Agricultural Systems (AAS), the Project Officer will be responsible (but not limited) to the following:
Tasks/Duties:
- Assist CFO in collaboration with WorldFish to conduct and organize identified activities within the AAS Program in Malaita Province, specifically in relation to the Provincial Fisheries functions. Activities include supporting community action plans related to fisheries management and aquaculture and identifying sites for activities
- Work with CFO and WorldFish to seek funds in support of Malaita Inshore Fisheries Strategies
- Together with CFO, establish processes and mechanisms for Community Based Organizations to register management plans in line with the upcoming Malaita Fisheries Ordinance
- Establish data management systems for community fisheries activities (FADs, mangrove replanting, community managed areas)
- Collaborate with NGO's in providing training programs to aquaculture farmers and fishers.
- Monitor environmental effects associated with aquaculture development and undertake any specific duties as maybe directed by CFO
- Degree in Fisheries or Marine Science or related degree
- Ability to work well within a team, and independently
- Good writing skills, experienced in writing reports
- Experienced in using Microsoft Office applications
- Able to travel extensively around the Province
- Excellent communication skills, flexible and creative in solving problems
