Job: Temporary Assistance for Capacity Building in All Regions

Assignment:
Under the general supervision of the Chief, Capacity Building and Training Section, International Data Centre Division, to:
  • Assess the awareness and usage of Provisional Technical Secretariat (PTS) data and products in the beneficiary States;
  • Identify the current needs and interests, and increase awareness of PTS data and products, including their potential use for civil and scientific purposes;
  • Establish contact with other relevant institutions in each country that might benefit from utilizing PTS data and products;
  • Facilitate networking between the national authority/National Data Centre (NDC) and above relevant institutes as appropriate;
  • Participate in the hands-on training courses for NDC analysts;
  • Conduct a follow-up technical visit(s) to ensure that the local technical staff can routinely use PTS data and products;
  • Customize operational, analysis and reporting procedures for the NDC;
  • Facilitate integrating International Monitoring System (IMS) data and International Data Centre (IDC) products with local data sources and help develop common procedures for processing and analysis of the combined data (where possible);
  • Install, configure and train local staff on the operation and maintenance of Capacity Building System when appropriate;
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the expertise.
Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Geophysics or related field. In the absence of an advanced degree, a first level university degree in combination with two additional years qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree;
  • A least 5 years of relevant working experience;
  • In-depth knowledge of, and experience in installing, configuring and using PTS software for IMS data and IDC products;
  • Experience in seismo-acoustic data analysis;
  • Experience in installing Linux computer systems (servers, workstations, UPS, tape-backup, LAN) - preferably with PTS Capacity Building Systems;
  • Management and organizational skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Working knowledge of other official languages of the CTBTO Preparatory Commission is an asset.

Remuneration/Service Agreement
Remuneration for Temporary Assistants shall be determined in accordance with the monthly total net salary, step 1, without dependency benefits, of the United Nations salary scales for staff in related categories for Vienna and, if applicable, subject to deductions of contributions to the CTBTO Health Insurance scheme for Temporary Assistants.This assignment has been classified at P-3 level for the duration of the contract.Agreements for Temporary Assistance shall be made under a Service Agreement not to exceed 130 working days.
