I. Background
The Education for Sustainable Development ESD/EDU unit in the UNESCO Jakarta office coordinates a range of activities that promote the re-orientation of education systems, educational institutions and teaching and learning processes toward the principles of sustainability. To strengthen the role of education in empowering people to address environment, economic, and social concerns, the unit has promoted the delivery of ESD content and pedagogy in pilot ‘Green Schools' as well as Basice Science Education in cooperation with Governments & the National Commission for UNESCO of the Cluster Countries of UNESCO Jakarta Office. Starting in 2014, the unit will expand its ESD activities into non-formal education through community learning centres (CLCs). In this context, the incumbent is expected to contribute to the delivery of UNESCO's ESD programme in the Cluster countries serviced by the UNESCO Jakarta Office by a professional coordinating manner .
II. Duties and requirements
Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Jakarta and the direct supervision of the ESD Team Leader, Education Unit, the incumbent will undertake the following tasks and responsibilities:
1. Project Management
- Manage both the substantive and organisational aspects of project activities to ensure timely delivery of high quality outputs.
- Ensure timely narrative and financial reporting on elements from the project and budget portfolio falling under the incumbent's responsibility, both within UNESCO and to external donors as appropriate.
- Ensure government ownership over project activities and project sustainability upon completion.
- Plan and conduct field missions, meetings and workshops.
- Contribute to the preparation of conferences, seminars and workshops organised or co-organised by the ESD/EDU Unit.
- Co-ordinate and supervise contributions from external consultants and other junior colleagues working on the projects. UNESCO DOES NOT CHARGE A FEE AT ANY STAGE OF THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS.
2. Analysis and Drafting
- Undertake research, under appropriate supervision and in the context of programmatic goals, draft reports and develop policy recommendations.
3. Liaison and Representation
- Contribute to establish and reinforce professional contacts with other parts of UNESCO, research and government institutions, key organisations and individuals outside, in the field of ESD and education policy.
- Co-operate with other UNESCO offices and institutes and stakeholders in this work, as required.
- Liaise with relevant officials, notably with regard to data/information collection and monitoring of activities implemented at the field level.
- Present the activities in relevant international events and deliver presentations and/or papers.
4. Contribution to the Work Programme
- Contribute to the overall development of the ESD/EDU unit's programme of activities, including project proposal processes.
III. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Education
- Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in Education or related areas.
2. Work Experience
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in programme coordination, preferably intergovernmental, or non-governmental agencies. Significant experience in development work with an international organization is an advantage.
3. Skills/Competencies
- Proven experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs/projects related to education and ESD.
- Experience in capacity development in the area of teachers and education in lower- and middle-income country contexts.
- Good writing skills and ability to draft clear and concise reports.

- Good interpersonal skills and ability to maintain good working relations with colleagues and staff at all levels within and outside the Organization.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment and team cooperation.
- Good computer skills.
4. Languages
- Excellent command of written and spoken English or French. Working knowledge of the other language would be an asset.
IV. Benefits and Entitlements
UNESCO's salaries are calculated in US dollars and exempt from income tax. They consist of a basic salary and a post adjustment which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station and exchange rates. Other benefits include: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, home travel, education grant for dependent children, pension plan and medical insurance.
