Laboratory Officer with Animal Facility under the Laboratory Services (Internal Advertisement #396/13)
icddr,b invites applications from suitable candidates(Staff members & CSA holders) for the position ofLaboratory Officer with Animal Facility under the Laboratory Services. The appointment will be made on a fixed-term basis for 2 years, which is renewable depending on performance and availability of funds.
Duty station – Dhaka
Salary – Annual Tk. 400,630/- inclusive of house rent and conveyance allowances with other admissible benefits.
Benefits/facilities – 14.8% retirement fund contribution by icddr,b, children allowance @Tk.1,420/- per child per month, medical facilities for dependent spouse and children, group life insurance. Subsidized canteen, transport and daycare facilities subject to availability.
Job Profile
  • Animal House Maintenance: Estimate food, bedding and other requirements monthly & raises requisition and maintaining accounts accordingly, considering current animal colonies and future breeding plans; Raise requisitions for procurement; Conduct visits to vendor production site to monitor and check quality of food preparation; check accounts and escalate issues to supervisor; Coordinate with external clients for pending payments; Maintain documentation for all staff and other animal functions; Coordinate with maintenance department for upkeep of animal facility equipments in order to maintain effective and efficient functioning of the animal house.
  • Animal Maintenance: Prepare breeding plan as per supervisor's directions & ensure proper care, management & breeding set up of all species of lab. animals as supervisor's plan; Selection of future breeding stock of all species; Track individual Breeding Record to check for successful breeding processes; Conduct quarantine and vaccination of newly arrived animals; Conduct daily visits to animal colonies to check health & breeding status of animals; Track improvement in health of the identified sick animals; Escalate all issues to supervisor and take corrective action in order to maintain an inventory of healthy animals for research activities.
  • Animal Trials: Provide technical assistance for conducting bio-medical assays in different animal models as per requirements; Prepare animals for experimentation as per the directions of Head - Animal Resources Branch; Assist in all surgical & inoculation work on research animal which includes anaesthesia of animals; Ensure proper management & observation of the research animals before & after the experiment; Perform autopsy and provide relevant animal tissue samples to researchers for further processing; Direct team to dispose off the sacrificed animal as per bio-safety guidelines in order to conduct animal trials as per bio-safety and ethical guidelines of icddr,b.
  • Bio security Management: Ancillary sanitation & cleaning services viz. vermin control, sanitation & cleaning of routine cages / bedding materials & surgical instruments sterilization; Operation of incinerator & safe disposal of infectious carcass, hospital & lab wastes in order to comply with Bio Security Management.
  • Knowledge Management: Knowledge of Surgical & inoculation work on lab animals; Anesthesia of experimental animals ; Breeding, care & management of different lab animals; Disposal of carcasses through Incineration; Sterilization (Autoclave) of bedding material & instruments; vermin control etc. Good proficiency in using MS-Office in order to carry out day to day operations effectively.
  • Process Improvement: Keep abreast with latest animal facilities in other parts of the world; Review internal capacities to identify gaps; Propose solutions required for up-gradation; Prepare relevant documentation; Seek approval from supervisor; Plan for implementation of improvement; Take corrective action; Ancillary staff decision is given on spot; problem solving ability & reporting to branch head; Maintain congenial working atmosphere with the ancillary staff; Able to communicate effectively; Must have innovative thinking skill; Able to adopt with continuous learning in order todevelop state-of-art animal facility in icddr,b
Requirements:
Education and Relevant Experience :
  • B.Sc. in Medical Technology (Lab) or Bsc. (Hons) with 15 yrs experience on the job training in the relevant field;
  • 3-5 years experience in the relevant field is required.
