Organizational Setting and Reporting
This post is located within the Economic Analysis Section, Economic Development and Globalization Division (EDGD) of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The Economics Affairs Officer reports directly to the Chief, Economic Analysis Section and will be under the overall supervision of the Director of EDGD.
Responsibilities
The Economics Affairs Officer will be responsible for carrying out the following:
Economic or sector analysis
1. Develops socio-economic databases and qualitative information necessary for specified recurrent or ad hoc assignments.
2. Interprets, applies and, as necessary, adapts econometric models to determine trends, patterns and relationships and to analyse the effects of alternative policies and assumptions.
3. Research's and drafts specified inputs for technical papers and analytical studies on selected aspects of economic development and macroeconomics.
4. Identifies and analyses policy proposals relating to assigned topics.
5. Attends international, regional, and national meetings to collect information and to hold discussions with colleagues in other institutions in relative areas
6. Contributes to the production and roll out of the section's annual flagship publication related to the economic and social developments in the region.
7. Assists in the organization and servicing of the section's expert group meetings, seminars, launching events, etc..
8. Prepares presentations, press releases, speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.
Technical cooperation
9. Prepares documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects.
10. Contributes to the preparation of material for the approval of regional, country or sector technical cooperation projects.
11. Monitors, backstops, assesses and reports the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects.
General
12. Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.
13. Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit'S services.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics or related field. A
first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For the post advertised, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
Assessment Method
The shortlisted candidates will undergo a substantive assessment related to the functions of the post in addition to a competency-based interview. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted.
Special Notice
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
