Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Public Information and Knowledge Management Division (PIKMD) in the Publications and Documentation Section (PDS), English Translation and Editing Unit (ETEU). Under the supervision of the Chief, PDS, the incumbent will be in charge of the English Translation and Editing Unit.
Responsibilities
Within the delegated authority, the English Reviser/Chief of the English Translation and Editing Unit will be responsible for the following duties: Translates into English from French, mostly without revision, texts and revises translations covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency; drafts, mostly without revision, summary records and serves as monitor of précis-writing teams; develops new terminology and reference materials for use where none exists in the target language; trains, counsels and assists ECA English translators/editors and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Section, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required; supervises the work of ECA English Translation and Editing Unit programmes, the daily work of the English Translation and Editing Unit and ensures that deadlines are met; assists the Chief of the Publications and Documentation Section in the day-to-day personnel management of the Section; at the request of the Documents Processing Unit, checks the quality of English translations subcontracted by ECA in order to give an opinion on subcontracted English translations in conformity with United Nations standards; acts as First Reporting Officer for all the Unit's staff (e-Performance); in collaboration with the Documents Processing Unit, assists in the computerization of the ECA English reference unit; serves as officer-in-charge in the absence of the Chief of Publications and Documentation Section; performs other related duties as required.

Education
Degree from a university or from an institution of equivalent status required. Must have passed the United Nations competitive examination for English translators.
Work Experience
At least five years of experience in translation and précis-writing experience, of which three preferably should have been within the United Nations is required. Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical) with a recognized specialization in a particular substantive, technical or administrative area is desirable.
Languages
A perfect command of English, which must be the candidate's main language, and excellent knowledge of French is required. Knowledge of another official language of the United Nations (preferably Arabic), as tested by the appropriate United Nations competitive examination and demonstrated by performance in the Organization, is desirable.
Assessment Method
Short-listed candidates will be subject to a competency-based interview or other assessment methods as required.
Special Notice
