OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
The EDT unit, under the Director, Programme Management's Office, is responsible for ensuring that all official documents and communications issued by the Regional Director and the Regional Office are in clear and appropriate standard English. It is the central and coordinating unit for all Regional Committee documentation. It is also responsible for editing and monitoring submission of mission reports, meeting reports, and other documentation produced by the Regional Office.
Description of duties:
Under the general supervision of the Senior Editor the incumbent performs the following functions:
  • edit correspondence/reports/documents for correctness, consistency, clarity, organization, and style, and communicate with the technical units regarding needed changes;
  • supervise the monitoring of submission and distribution of reports, minimizing delays and solving problems as necessary;
  • provide guidance as necessary on other matters related to the use of written English in the Regional Office;
  • keep abreast of and maintain accurate and comprehensive records of all relevant amendments and other changes issued by technical divisions; research new titles;
  • propose editorial changes in manuscripts and clarify technical queries: keep responsible unit informed as appropriate;
  • edit tables of contents, forewords, promotional materials, supplements, errata sheets and texts for covers as necessary;
  • verify accuracy and quality of technical drawings and illustrations, mathematical formulae, etc.
  • check and approve proofs; and
  • act for the Senior Editor during his absence, and perform other related duties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
  • University degree in communications, development, or public health/policy or equivalent professional experience. Master's degree in Communications-related field an advantage.
Skills:
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • Excellent editing skills and familiarity with WHO terminology.
  • Familiarity with WHO style.
  • Extremely computer literate, with advanced experience in Microsoft Office applications, as well as electronic publishing, design and project management software.

Experience:
  • Five years experience in writing and editing (private and/or public/development sector) articles and other communications.
  • Familiarity with public health/development sector issues as a writer and editor.
  • Experience in ''re-write' and in clarifying and simplifying public/development sector documents written by non-native English speakers.
  • Demonstrated body of work writing and editing articles and other communications, particularly for public sector/development organizations.
  • Familiarity with and experience working in developing countries.
  • Experiences in writing and editing documents for the WHO, United Nations or other multilateral development organizations is desirable.
Languages:
  • Excellent English-speaking and writing skills, knowledge of second language helpful.

USD 60 091 with primary dependants
