Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Official Records Editing Section of the Editorial, Terminology and Reference Service, Documentation Division, Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Chief of the Official Records Editing Section.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Editor is responsible for the following duties (these duties are generic and may not be carried out by all Editors):
1. Edits complex or politically sensitive material, normally without revision, to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice.
2. Consults with author departments and Translation Services, and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors.
3. Produces the master copy of a text to be followed by a multilingual team of editors and, as necessary, leads concordance exercises.
4. Acts as head of team, organizing its work, determining and enforcing deadlines and providing guidance to its
members.
5. Assists in drawing up guidelines for editors and in determining desktop publishing standards and practices.
6. Serves as focal point for issues relating to information technology; and provides advice to staff and management on the use of information technology.
7. Programmes daily and long-term work of the Section.
8. Trains junior or short term editors and revises their work; and provides feedback and input for performance assessment.
9. Assists staff of substantive units and delegations with the drafting of documentation and provides advice on matters concerning editorial policy and practice.
10, Acts for head of office or group in his or her absence.
11. Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status. Candidates for this position must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Arabic Editors or the United Nations Competitive Examination for Arabic Translators/Editors.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 (five) years of progressively responsible experience in editing, including at least 3 years of experience in editing within the United Nations, is required. Experience in onscreen editing is also required.
Languages
A perfect command of Arabic, which must be the candidate's main language, and excellent knowledge of at least two other official languages (one of which should be English), as tested by the relevant United Nations Competitive Examination for Editors or for Translators/Editors, are required.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
