Organizational Setting and Reporting
The West Africa Integrated Operational Team (WAIOT) is seeking candidates for an internship for the Winter-Spring of 2013.The team is situated within the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Office of Operations, Africa II Division, and comprises experts in Political Affairs, Police, Military and Field Support issues.
The West Africa IOT provides political and operational support as well as strategic substantive guidance for the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), and monitors regional developments in West Africa. As an integrated team it draws on experience and information from various offices of the Department and serves as the key entry point at the Headquarters as far as interaction with Member States and other partners is concerned.
Duration: The internship will be for two months with an opportunity for extension possible up to six months, depending on the needs of the office. The exact dates of the internship can be flexible; however the WAIOT is looking for an intern to join the team as soon after 1 December as possible.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
The candidate will perform the following duties:
Monitor and analyze developments related to the implementation of UNOCI's and UNMIL's mandates
Based on situation reports and media reports from the mission area, provide a daily newsfeed for principals
Monitor general issues, including through summarizing key public and academic articles, correspondences relating to peacekeeping in West Africa
Draft weekly reports on UNOCI/UNMIL for the Security Council
Assist in updating and maintaining the IOT online collaboration tool
Participate in meetings and draft minutes/meeting summaries
Carry out individual research assignments on peacekeeping-related issues
Perform all additional tasks as requested by the supervisor

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university of
higher) or, if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into
undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a
university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree; be computer literate in
standard software applications; have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United
Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have demonstrated
the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and
beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions
and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Experience relating to Africa and peacekeeping is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this post fluency in English and French is required.
