OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
I. Background,
The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) is UNESCO's first education-related category 1 institute in the Asia and the Pacific region towards the development and promotion of new approaches to education for a more peaceful and sustainable world. The Institute aims to contribute to the conceptualization, design and formulation of regional and sub-regional strategies in education for peace and sustainable development, in particular through South-South and triangular North-South-South cooperation.
This post is concerned with the education for peace and sustainable development in the formal sector including areas such as curriculum studies, teacher training, capacity building and evaluation approaches.
II. Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall authority of the Director of the Institute, the direct supervision of the Team Leader and in close cooperation with staff in other programme sections, the incumbent will serve as Associate National Project Officer for Education for Peace/Sustainable Development/Human Development and Global Citizenship.
The incumbent will work within the framework of Institute's Mid-term strategy, Biennial programmes and budget consistent within overall UNESCO framework for action. S/he will perform the following tasks:
1. Analyse, evaluate and contribute to the development of the Institute's programme for Education for Peace within the overarching principle of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development. This would involve region wide approach/approaches and strategies for promoting Education for Peace and Sustainable Development in the formal education sector;
2. Plan and implement programme activities to reflect the needs of member states in peace education in the formal education sector. Develop new project options and proposals, raise extra budgetary funds and implement projects funded through extra budgetary funding;
3. Coordinate and prepare reports on the implementation of Education for Peace related programmes and projects within the formal education sector. Prepare briefings, summaries and other documentation as necessary with regards to Education for Peace using appropriate materials;
4. Contribute to the planning, development and implementation of outreach strategies aimed at programme expansion, organize consultation as appropriate with stake holders and partners and provide input to appropriate returns to be made to UNESCO Headquarters;
5. Contribute to generating and creating knowledge, information and appropriate data for the clearing house function of the Institute. Update and review on-going information with regards to research, development, events, activities, institutions and individual contributors to education for peace in the formal education sector. Provide and extract appropriate information for the Institute website and interactive portal;
6. Participate in the MGIEP Management Team, lead and manage cross sectorial activities within and outside the Institute, establishing synergies in all aspects of MGIEP objectives;
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSE DUCATION
  • Advanced university degree (Master degree or equivalent) in Education, Sustainable development / International development / Sociology / Research studies.
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • At least two (2) years of relevant experience in planning development and implementation of national or international development programmes linked with education, sustainable development particularly in relation to formal education programme.
  • Experience of working with UN agencies, Multilateral donors (national or/and international) would be an asset;
  • Experience of research and programme development would be of particular advantage
  • Experience in fund raising would be an advantage;
SKILLS /COMPETENCIES
  • Strong communication skills (writing/oral). Ability to draft clear and concise reports.
  • Analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain good working relations with colleagues and staff at all levels within and outside the Organization.
  • Good IT skills
LANGUAGES
  • Fluency in English. Knowledge of Hindi and another UN official language would be considered as an asset
