Purpose of the Position
To lead the development of UNICEF's engagement with the private sector across the African continent (spanning the ESAR, WCAR and MENA regions), taking an integrated approach encompassing fundraising (from the business, foundation and philanthropy community),resource leveraging, corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagement and programmatic cooperation, in order to maximize private sector support for children's rights and well-being.
Key Expected Results
1. Provides strategic advice to regional and country offices, and to Regional Management Teams, in the development of regional and national strategies and implementation plans to engage with the private sector, encompassing fundraising from the business, foundation and philanthropy community, resource leveraging, CSR initiatives and programmatic cooperation; maintains up-to-date intelligence on, and insights into, private sector development and philanthropy in the region, including key players and influencers, and uses this to inform the development of strategies and plans; assesses opportunities and challenges for private sector engagement, at country and regional level. Key End Results: The potential of business, foundation and philanthropy community for results and resources for children is leveraged through optimal UNICEF strategies.
2. Builds and manages regional-level partnerships with leading multi-country corporations, foundations and individual major philanthropists, ensuring synergy between fundraising, CSR and programme engagement; supports the regional roll-out of global corporate and foundation partnerships. Key End Results: The potential of leading regional players in the business, foundation and philanthropy community is seized.
3. Oversees the effective development of UNICEF's capacity in the region to engage effectively with the private sector; oversees PFP technical support to regional and country offices in their implementation of private sector engagement strategies; guides these offices in defining and developing appropriate resourcing for private sector engagement. Key End Results: Regional and country offices have the capacity to engage effectively with the private sector.
4. Ensures that regional and country offices have in place adequate procedures for systematically managing and mitigating risks inherent in private sector engagement, as part of the UNICEF Enterprise Risk Management approach; provides risk management guidance to these offices for engagement with high risk partners to minimise reputational risk; ensures that these offices have up-to-date understanding of PFP-issued policies and guidance; supports these offices in managing crises related to private fundraising and partnership activities. Key End Results: The reputational risk to UNICEF of private sector engagement is managed and mitigated.
5. Manages the relationship between PFP and the concerned regions, to assure alignment on the development of private fundraising and partnerships in the Africa region. Key End Results: Private sector engagement in the region is aligned with global strategies, priorities and approaches.
6. Assures effective knowledge management, including sharing of lessons learned and taking best practice to scale; keeps different parts of the PFP division abreast of main developments in the region. Key End Results: Knowledge is created, shared and applied to optimize private sector engagement.
7. Manages the Nairobi team for maximum results; ensures work plans are developed and ensures objectives and targets are achieved; ensures monitoring and evaluation of strategies and work plan implementation, as well as mid-term and annual reviews; identifies problems or alternative courses of action to improve delivery of results; leads staff to assure optimal performance. Key End Results: The Nairobi unit operates effectively and efficiently.
Qualifications of Successful Candidate
  • Advanced university degree in international development, social sciences, business administration, management, marketing or fundraising. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience (at least 13 years of experience ) may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant work experience, five of which should be at an international level in fundraising, philanthropy or CSR. Knowledge of fundraising, philanthropy and CSR is required. Knowledge and experience of the African context, and experience of working in international organizations, are advantages.
  • Fluency in English required. Proficiency in another UN language (preferably French) highly desirable.
