Qualifications and Experience
- Master's degree in communication, journalism, political science or related discipline;
- At least 10 years of relevant experience, with leadership skills and managerial responsibility;
- English fluency and additional language is most desirable;
- Extensive experience in working in a multicultural environment;
- Willingness and ability to work in high-pressure and controversial situations is desirable;
- Experience in the fields of science, agriculture, nutrition, public health.
Basic purpose
To provide principal leadership and implementation support for lRRI's 'Healthier Rice' communication programs and activities, both external and internal.
Roles and responsibilities
Major Accountabilities / Responsibilities
1. To serve as head of IRRI's Healthier Rice Program Communications activities, including specific roles designated in ERR grants;
2. To set and maintain visibility of lRRI's Healthier Rice Program, and promote and maintain itsreputation and credibility as an international scientific research and development program at IRRI;a. Develop communications vision, strategy and goals for the Program overall, and forindividual projects within the program, including Golden Rice, Iron Rice and Zinc Rice;b. Develop plans to implement the strategy globally and in target countries, including thePhilippines, Bangladesh and Indonesia;c. Monitor and evaluate the perceptions of stakeholders about the Healthier Rice program, and adjust strategy and plans as necessary;d. Anticipate potential issues that could endanger the Program's reputation and/ or researchactivities, and develop and implement plans to mitigate them;
3. To establish and maintain high-level guidelines for communications about Healthier Rice;
a. Set standards for frequency, images, terminology, and tone so that all communications about Healthier Rice are consistent;
b. Liaise with other IRRI Communications teams to include Healthier Rice information in institutional publications as appropriate;
c. Design and implement regular training/briefing activities for IRRI. senior management and staff to share knowledgeable communications about Healthier Rice to all stakeholders;
4. Serve as a coordinator for the Work of other Healthier Rice communicators based in various partner organizations;
a. Build strong productive relationships with all organizations participating in IRRI'S HealthierRice related projects and activities, including:
i. National Rice Research institutes in the Philippines. Bangladesh and Indonesia;
ii. National and international nutrition organizations, including Helen Keller International;
iii. Donors, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation;
iv. Other programs. including HarvestPlus5.
Oversee IRRI Communications Specialists in implementing the Healthier Rice communicationagenda in the Philippines. Bangladesh, lndonesia.- Supervise staff, including annual work plans and human resources evaluations b. Ensure that staff have all necessary resources;
6. Serve as writer and/or editor of communication products of the IRRI's Healthier Rice Program; anda. Lead review and creation of communication products such as:i. the Project Brief;ii. IRRI websites on Rice & Nutrition, Golden Rice and others;iii. Presentation and exhibit materials;iv.
Frequently Asked Questions; andv. other innovative communication materials as needed for specific audiencesb. Ensure: high quality. scientific and technical accuracy and consistency of all communicationproducts;
7. Work on other communication and outreach activities as assigned by the IRRI Healthier RiceProgram Leader, IRRl Communications Director and IRRI senior management.
