Organizational Setting and Reporting
The internship is located at the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (RCAP), Incheon, Republic of Korea. The UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific is a unit within the International Trade Law Division (ITLD), Office of Legal Affairs, United Nations, Vienna (Austria). The Division functions as the substantive secretariat of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
UNCITRAL received from the United Nations General Assembly the general mandate to further the progressive harmonization and unification of the law of international trade. UNCITRAL has since come to be the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. The activities of UNCITRAL are focused on private law and involve little interplay with the work of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

The UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific in Incheon, Republic of Korea, has been established for the primary goals of dissemination of international trade norms and standards, in particular those elaborated by UNCITRAL, and provision of technical assistance to States of the region with respect to the adoption and uniform interpretation of UNCITRAL texts.
The intern will work under the direct supervision of professional staff of the Regional Centre.
Responsibilities
The objective of the internship is on the one hand to assist the officers of the UNCITRAL Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific in Incheon, Republic of Korea, in preparing substantive documents in relation to the operation of the Centre and on the other hand to provide practical training to the intern. After the internship, the intern will gain experience in international trade law.
Specific assignments during the internship include:
Assisting officers of the Centre with preparing substantive documents in relation to the operation of the Centre
Contributing to the identification of legislative reform needs and assistance requirements in selected countries and/or sectors of the region
Assisting with the collection and analysis of case law on UNCITRAL texts, national legislation and legal developments, in the region
Assisting with the development and maintenance of the Centre's web page at the UNCITRAL website
Assisting with the coordination functions of the Centre
Undertaking ad hoc legal and administrative assignments as requested.

Education
Applicants for an internship must be enrolled in a full-time university degree program (Master's or equivalent) in a graduate school (second university degree or higher), or, if applicants are pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, they must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. Their major field of study must be commercial law, international trade law or private international law.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the program but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application.
Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency, is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, particularly Chinese, is an advantage.

Duration: This internship position is for a minimum duration of two months within the period of 1 December 2013 - 31 May 2014. This internship is unpaid. The intern will work five days per week (40 hours).

The Cover Note must include:- Name of university and title of degree the applicant is currently pursuing;
