ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nature Conservancy's statewide volunteer program in Oregon involves 700 community members in volunteer service each year, greatly expanding the capacity of our organization. The Volunteer Programs Coordinator works with the Director of Volunteer Programs to plan, promote, expand and improve The Nature Conservancy's statewide volunteer program. This position also serves as part of the Operations Administration Team, sharing front desk support for the Portland office.
Responsibilities include the following:
  • Coordinate statewide volunteer restoration work party. Work with preserve stewards to plan and recruit volunteers for work parties. Attend work parties and act as crew leader when necessary.
  • Work with Director of Volunteer Programs and conservation staff to identify needs, recruit, place and orient work crews including AmeriCorps, school, youth and corporate work crews. May includes writing and editing grant proposals for work crews.
  • Assist with management of the naturalist program.
  • Recruit volunteers and assist with interviews, placement and orientation of volunteers.
  • Maintain and improve volunteer database.
  • Work with the Director of Volunteer Programs to develop safety training materials and maintain emergency contact lists. Train volunteers in operating various types of equipment, defensive driving, and reporting and managing accidents. Also includes coordinating First Aid/CPR trainings for volunteer leaders.
  • Supervise Wednesday evening work parties and volunteers reporting to the volunteer program.
  • Work with the Director of Volunteer Programs to promote volunteer leadership and recognize volunteers. Includes special event planning for volunteer recognition events.
  • Create program materials including the volunteer e-newsletter and attend outreach events to promote the volunteer programs.
  • As part of the Operations Administrative Team, assist with various office tasks including some or all of the following: answering phones, greeting guests, coordinating rental vehicles, sorting/distributing mail, working with vendors, maintaining various logs and lists, providing back-up front desk coverage to the department, and other duties as assigned. Front desk support is estimated to be approximately 25% of the position, or 10 hours/week.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience in organizing and managing a volunteer program demonstrating knowledge of the structure and needs required.
  • Experience in MS Office, Word, Excel and navigating the Internet.
  • Experience in written and verbal communication with staff, public, and partners.
  • Experience delivering presentations and communicating information to a diverse audience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 1 year experience in organizing and managing a volunteer program demonstrating knowledge of the structure and needs required.
  • Demonstrated experience in MS Office, Word and Excel. May require database management skills with ability to produce reports. Ability to use advanced computer functions including navigating the Internet.
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to organize time and manage diverse activities. Meet deadlines.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain required licenses and certifications including CPR/First Aid and driver's license.
