Context BBC Media Action uses various forms of media and communications to tackle poverty and contribute to long-term change in some of the world's poorest places.
To achieve this, we partner with civil society, local media and governments to:
  • Produce creative programmes in multi-media formats which inform and engage audiences around key development issues.
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.
Job purpose
BBC Media Action is recruiting a Lead Producer for its radio programme Lin Lat Kyair Sin (Bright Young Stars), or LLKS. LLKS reaches out to a youth audience across Burma, helping listeners learn more about their rights; the diversity of their country and issues that directly affect their lives from education to jobs opportunities. Using discussion, interviews, outside broadcasts and sound rich radio packages the show inspires young people to express their opinions and helps them better understand how to actively participate in their communities. LLKS currently reaches approximately 3.5 million adults across Burma and is broadcast weekly on the BBC Burmese Service. The Lead Producer will have the vision, drive and creativity to make LLKS one of the most entertaining and informative radio shows in the country. The Lead Producer will have creative and editorial responsibility for the LLKS radio show and provide editorial and production oversight to a production team of 5 reporters. They will be responsible for managing the production budget, planning schedules, attending edits and studio recordings and providing clear written feedback and guidance on scripts, reporting guidelines and story ideas. They will ensure programmes meet weekly transmission deadlines and comply with BBC editorial guidelines. They will also be responsible for maintaining the production's online platforms, including Facebook and Soundcloud. They will be responsible for line-managing the production team and will work closely with the Media Trainer (Radio) to develop capacity of team members to ensure strong production values are maintained. The Lead Producer will also work closely with members of the Outreach and Research teams to ensure that audiences are engaged in programming and that learnings are being fed back into production. Finally, the Lead Producer will be expected to be an active member of the office Management Team.
Main duties
Produce LLKS weekly radio series and deliver final TX version and trails to broadcast partners
  • Commission content to production team.
  • Develop content, write scripts, links and story treatments.
  • Provide feedback and suggestions on story ideas, reporting guidelines and scripts, including specific feedback on use of Burmese language.
  • Manage reporters to support production tasks and increase audience engagement and interactivity.
  • Line manage all members of the production team.
  • Approve potential contributors and interviewees selected by production team.
  • Use technology, such as recording equipment and Adobe Audition, for editing and production purposes.
  • Manage LLKS online platforms to keep them up to date and in line with BBC editorial standards.
  • Liaise with internal teams as appropriate including Outreach and Research & Learning.
  • Ensure that health and safety standards, and BBC editorial guidelines are met.
  • Participate in Burma Office management duties as required.
  • Establish positive working relationships with broadcast partners, including BBC Burmese Service to ensure LLKS reaches its target audience.
Essential skills and experience
  • A proven record as a creative radio programme maker.
  • A thorough understanding and practical experience of the mechanics of radio.
  • An understanding of the target audience and communities within Myanmar.
  • Reliable editorial judgement and production values as applicable to all aspects of programme making.
  • Experience in managing production teams
  • Proven ability to provide oral and written feedback on scripts, reporting guidelines and story ideas.
  • Experience delivering production outputs to deadlines
  • Burmese national with excellent written and spoken English Desirable skills and experience
  • Strong understanding of youth, governance, and development issues.
  • Experience in managing production budgets and project planning
