Background
Please note that the OSCE is not in a position to pay any remuneration or cover any expenses incurred by the intern during his/her stay in Vienna nor reimburse travel expenses.
The Office of the Special Representative and Co-ordinator for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings (OSR CTHB) assists OSCE participating States in the implementation of commitments and usage of recommendations set forth in the OSCE Action Plan to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings. The Office provides a co-ordinating function among OSCE structures and institutions involved in combating trafficking in human beings (THB) with a focus on the following activities: enhancing the awareness and understanding of THB across the OSCE region; policy planning and advocacy especially in the area of emerging trends of THB and effective approaches to combating THB; and direct assistance to participating States in practical and technical areas, at their request.
The Office is looking for interns for three month periods throughout 2014 starting in January. Interested candidates should indicate their availability when completing the online application form. The selected interns will have an excellent opportunity of gaining an overview of CTHB events since the establishment of the office in 2004, as well as insight into the current priorities and activities entrusted to the Office within its mandate. The selected interns will work with all members of the team and will be tasked with some, if not all, of the duties outlined below.
Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Assisting the Project Officer in the implementation and monitoring of extrabudgetary funded projects, preparation of the reports to the donors and communication with the Field Operations where relevant;
  • Assisting the Public Information Officer by researching and collecting news articles about trafficking in human beings and related topics from the OSCE region, and compiling them into electronic folders, organized by date, topic or region;
  • Performing any thematic or geographical research related to trafficking in human beings for the Special Representative, her Deputy or her Advisers;
  • Assisting the Administrative Assistant with the organization of conferences and events by maintaining lists of participants, translating agendas and communication with speakers into other OSCE official languages, and performing any other duties as requested;
  • Attending Permanent Council meetings, and any other (internal or external) meetings and conferences on request, and taking notes about any trafficking-related issues which may be brought up;
  • Following up on meetings by summarizing notes into a draft report;
  • Preparing materials for dispatch (e.g. burning CDs, making bound copies of OSR reports) - in response to requests from PPIS, the Missions/Field Operations, or external enquiries;
  • Preparing press kits for journalists at events organized by the OSR/CTHB (including conferences and technical seminars in connection with the Alliance Against Trafficking in Persons), as well as dispatching of materials/flags:
  • Compiling documents, speeches and presentations for distribution, filing and USB sticks for speakers at the OSR/CTHB events;
  • Assisting with the preparation of materials for distribution at the OSR/CTHB events (binders, CDs, note-pads);
  • Performing various administrative tasks, such as registering staff at external conferences, completion of visa application forms, editing documents, making bound copies of documents, etc.
Necessary Qualifications
  • Applicants should be under the age of 30 on the date of the deadline and from an OSCE participating State;
  • Students in the final year of higher education (university or other accredited institution) at graduate or postgraduate level: recent graduates or postgraduates, i.e. within one year of graduation with a background in international relations, human rights, political science, media and communications studies;
  • Previous experience in working for international organizations/internships;
  • Analytical, research and drafting skills;
  • Good organizational skills with ability to process and classify information quickly and efficiently;
  • Professional fluency in English with excellent communication (both oral and written) skills;
  • Good knowledge of Russian (necessary for translating correspondence and communicating with Russian-speaking experts from the CIS region); knowledge of other OSCE official languages would be an asset;
  • Excellent IT knowledge, familiarity with Microsoft Office and Internet applications;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people from different national and cultural backgrounds, whilst maintaining impartiality and objectivity.
Remuneration Package
This internship lasts three (3) months and does not constitute a commitment to future employment with the OSCE.
The selected intern will participate in the group health insurance scheme at his/her own expense but the OSCE will cover life and disability insurance.
