Organizational Setting and Reporting
The internship is located in the Precursor Control Section (PRE), Secretariat of the International Narcotics Control Board (SINCB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria).
The intern will work under the direct supervision of Professional staff of the Precursor Control Section.

Responsibilities
The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist in the development of a contact management system for competent national authorities responsible for precursor control; draft related correspondence
  • Collect and analyze precursor control-related data and information from various sources for INCB missions and reports, including supplementary information on countries' non-compliance with international treaties and conventions;
  • Prepare/ update/ format training and informational materials;
  • Assist/ test new IT system interfaces;
  • Assist in the implementation of INCB decisions;
  • Attend and take notes at meetings, including official Board meetings.
  • Perform other tasks as required.

Education
Applicants for an internship must be enrolled in a full-time university degree programme (Master's or equivalent) in a graduate school (second university degree or higher), or, if applicants are pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, they must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree. Experience in computer science, information systems or related field is desired.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application.
Applicants must have a keen demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English, i.e. oral and written proficiency is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Special Notice
Duration: This internship position is for an initial period of four months, starting on 21 Ocotober 2013, with the option to extend to a total period of six months, based on the needs of the office and the availability of the intern.
This internship is unpaid. The intern will work five days per week (40 hours).

  • Name of university and title of degree you are currently pursuing
  • Graduation date (when you expect to graduate from the programme)

  • An explanation why you are the best candidate for an intership with the Secretariat of the International Narcotics Control Board.
  • An explanation of your interest in the work of UNODC.
