Organizational Setting and Reporting
Applications are sought for an internship position within the Nairobi office of the Administrative Law Section in the Officer of Human Resources Management. The Administrative Law Section is seeking highly motivated graduate students who wish to gain professional experience in administrative law within an international organization in order to supplement their studies. This internship programme offers a practical educational experience and provides interns the opportunity to work in a multicultural, intergovernmental organization. The Administrative Law Section is located in the Human Resources Policy Service, Office of Human Resources Management in the Department of Management and has offices in New York and Nairobi. The Section is responsible for the preparation of advice on internal disciplinary matters and representation of the Organization in appeals before the United Nations Dispute Tribunal.
Responsibilities
The selected intern will undertake tasks under the supervision of a legal officer of the Nairobi office of the Appeals Unit of the Administrative Law Section. He/she will assist in conducting legal research and analysis, and assist counsel in the preparation of written and oral submissions, in connection with the representation of the Organization in proceedings before the United Nations Dispute Tribunal. He/she will assist in maintaining the Unit's databases and perform other duties as required.

Applicants must demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter of the United Nations. Applicants must have strong analytical skills and ability to conduct legal research on a range of relatively complex and intricate issues.

Communications:
- Applicants must have the ability to write in a clear and concise manner, including ability to draft/prepare presentations, legal submissions and reports.
- Need to speak and write clearly and effectively.
- Must listen to others and correctly interpret messages from others and respond appropriately and is expected to ask questions to clarify, and exhibit interest in having two-way communication.
Teamwork:
- Applicants need to have the ability to work effectively in a team with peers, as well as with supervisors in a multicultural environment and to work collaboratively with colleagues.
Planning & Organizing:
- The Administrative Law Section intern is expected to develop clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies, identify priority activities and assignments;
- adjust priorities as required, allocate appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work, and use time efficiently.
Education
- Applicants must be enrolled in a degree or other post-graduate programme in law in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship, or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four (4) years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
- Be computer literate in standard software applications
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- Fluency in oral and written English is required, and knowledge of French is desirable.

Special Notice
The Administrative Law Section internship is offering one intern position in Nairobi for a two-month period commencing in October / November 2013 (subject to the candidate's availability and school schedule) with an opportunity of extension up to six months. Please indicate in your cover letter the period for which you will be interested. The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member.
