Organizational Setting and Reporting
This internship allows a current library and information management student to apply her/his skills in support of the UN's Peace Operations around the globe. The selected candidate will play a key role in expanding the organization's Policy and Best Practices Database to further strengthen the platform's contribution in providing actionable knowledge on UN activities in the field of peace and security.
UN Secretariat internships are for a minimum two months with an opportunity for an extension, depending on the needs of the Department. This position is located in the Guidance and Learning Unit/Policy and Mediation Division of the Department of Political Affairs. The internship is UNPAID and full-time, starting in the first week of October 2013. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Guidance and Learning Unit's focal point for interns, the Intern will:
- Assist with the review of documents to be transferred to the Peace Operations Policy and Best Practices Database (PPDB).
- Assist with complementing critical metadata to these documents based on existing guidelines (e.g. author, description, classification, etc.). This will allow the intern to familiarize her/himself with UN political and peacekeeping missions.
- Assist with the transfer, upload and classification of these documents to the PPDB. Document the transfer process and conduct quality control activities (e.g. avoiding duplications)
- Conduct quality control activities (e.g. avoiding duplications)
- Assist with providing support to staff searching for policy and best practices documents
- Assist with the promotion of the PPDB, including by contributing to the monthly email newsletter to staff
- Develop annotated bibliographies from the PPDB in response to client requests
- Participate in meetings on knowledge management and information management
- Perform other related duties as required.

Education
- At least a first-level university degree in library science, information science, or a related field.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher);
- or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Work Experience
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Internship Programme.
- Experience with Microsoft Sharepoint 2007 or higher is an advantage.
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
- For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
