Description

The Secretary General is the operational leader of the Amnesty International movement. He is the chief political adviser and strategist, reporting to the International Executive Committee; the chief spokesperson of the movement, in representing AI’s interests to governments, media and other bodies, as well as to the AI movement; and the chief executive officer of the International Secretariat, heading the senior leadership and management teams.

The Office of the Secretary General (OSG) supports the Secretary General in these duties, providing high level strategic and operational advice and practical support including appointment coordination, planning and evaluation, and high-level communications. OSG also serves as a critical interface between the Secretary General and the movement, IS staff and public.

We are currently recruiting for a volunteer who will be able to assist the Office of the Secretary General Team, ideally for 3 days a week for a minimum of 3 months (preferably longer). If you are interested in volunteering for our team, we would like to hear from you.

Please note interviews will take place on 29th July and we would like the successful candidate to start on 5th August.

The successful volunteer would be expected to carry out the following tasks:
  • Logging and processing correspondence, delegating and following up where necessary
  • Assisting with email correspondence
  • Answering telephones and fielding calls for the team
  • Assisting with invitations process to the Secretary General with EA and Office Manager
  • Filing/photocopying
  • Updating contacts list and database
  • Financial administration (processing invoices etc)
  • Booking travel
  • Updating leave and annual planners
  • Consolidating entries for SG reports
  • Assisting with the collation of SG briefing folders and researching biographies and travel routes
  • Support to team OSG and other adhoc duties as required

We would expect the successful volunteer to have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience and willingness to undertake office work such as answering phones, photocopying, filing and archiving and organisation of own task list; 
  • Good working knowledge of computers; including familiarity with word processing and databases, email systems and the Internet; 
  • Fluent level of written and spoken English;
  • Good inter-personal and communication skills including liaising with high-level guests and senior colleagues;
  • Ability to work as part of a small team;
  • Ability to multi task and work to deadlines, sometimes under pressure; and
  • Experience (or willingness to learn) financial administration
