Organizational Setting and Reporting
The Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and the Department of Field Support (DFS) internships are for an initial period of three (3) months with an opportunity for an extension of up to three (3) months, depending on the needs of DPKO/DFS. This position is located in the Situation Centre (SitCen), in the Research and Liaison Unit, which provides the SitCen with an analytical capacity to undertake in-depth mid to long-term research studies on current political, security and operational issues affecting DPKO-DFS field missions.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned.

Please also be advised that the office is looking for interns that would be available to start on 2 September 2013 as well as in mid-September 2013, and preferably for a period of six (6) months.
Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Chief, Research and Liaison Unit (RLU), the Intern will:
- Support the RLU in the preparation of analytical and background papers, weekly presentations to Member States (Troop and Police Contributing Countries);
- Support the Chief of the SitCen in preparing presentations to the Senior Management;
- Support the SitCen in maintaining databases on incidents in field missions; and
- Undertake other assignments as required.

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) preferably in political science, history, international relations, law or a related field. If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, applicant must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the Internship Programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language, such as Arabic or French, is an advantage.
