Organizational Setting and Reporting
The Internship is located in the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Section of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). The DDR Section (DDRS) provides planning and operational support to DDR programmes in the following peacekeeping operations: MONUSCO (Democratic Republic of the Congo), UNOCI (Côte d'Ivoire), UNMISS (South Sudan), UNAMID (Darfur), and the MINUSTAH (Haiti) Community Violence Reduction Programme. The Section also assists the Special Political Missions BINUB (Burundi), BINUCA (Central African Republic) and Somalia (UNPOS) with planning for DDR and associated processes.
The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a DDRS staff member.
Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
Assist in providing planning and operational support to DDR components of peace operations.
Conduct specific research on current developments related to DDR in assigned countries.
Support the work of the Inter-Agency Working Group on DDR.
Assist in the management and further development of the DDR Resource Center website (www.unddr.org).
Attend seminars and meetings of interest to DDRS and provide briefing notes to colleagues.
Assist in any administrative work of the DDRS, including the organisation of meetings.
Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor.

Education
Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree;
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the internship programme.
Languages
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
