The Center's plant protection support is vital for a healthy, productive and profitable vegetable value chain for both global and traditional vegetables in developing countries. AVRDC aims to prevent or minimize losses caused by plant diseases, pests and ensure year-round supply of safe, nutritious vegetables while conserving agro-ecosystem health. To strengthen its plant pathology team, the Center seeks a post-doctoral Plant Pathologist to conduct research and development activities on managing major fungal diseases of vegetables. The main topics would include: develop and apply methods to detect and characterize major plant fungal pathogens; ii) identify and characterize vegetable germplasm with resistance to major fungal diseases; iii) develop efficient disease-screening protocols to support the Center's vegetable breeding programs; and iv) explore novel control strategies for sustainable management of vegetable diseases.
The position will be based at the Center's Headquarters in Shanhua, Tainan, Taiwan and will report to the Plant Pathologist. The Job:
The responsibilities of the post-doctoral Plant Pathologist will encompass the following:
  • Conduct strategic and adaptive research on managing vegetable fungal diseases under intensive as well as low-input field production systems by using the latest, most effective methods.
  • Contribute to the development of crop breeding lines with resistance to tomato late blight and pepper anthracnose.
  • Contribute to promoting sustainable vegetable disease management by disseminating eco-friendly practices for managing plant fungal diseases in different agro-ecosystems.
  • Publish and disseminate research results in peer-reviewed journals and scientific fora.
  • Contribute to administrative tasks and other duties assigned by the Supervisor as required.
The Person: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, with a good understanding of pathogen variation and the interactions between pathogens and host plants. Strong skills in experimental design and statistics, scientific writing, and excellent computer literacy are required. A track record of relevant publications in international peer-reviewed journals will be an advantage.The candidate must be able to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team in a multicultural, multinational environment, and should be able to interact effectively with partners as a team leader or member. Proficiency in written and oral English is required.
The Reward: This is an Internationally Recruited Staff (IRS) position with competitive pay and benefits. The initial appointment is for three years and may be extended depending on requirement, funding availability, and performance of the incumbent.
