The person and the position:
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is looking for a person with a bachelor's degree in information management, geography,agriculture or water resources, with a focus on database and information management. The person must also have at least 3 years of relevantprofessional experience at an entry-level position in the field of geographic information system (GIS)/remote sensing (RS). The position holder will report to the Manager - GIS/RS/Data Management and be based at the headquarters of IWMI in Pelawatte, Battaramulla.
You will:
  • perform GIS/RS activities of IWMI's GRandD unit along with other team members, including, but not limited to, performinggeometrical corrections, projection standardization, ortho-rectification, image classification, application of standardalgorithms/models, time series analysis using multi-sensor satellite imageries and preparation of standard outputs (includingmaps);
  • develop spatial models and spatial analysis for bulk data processing;
  • provide technical support to researchers, at IWMI's headquarters and in the regional offices, in carrying out complex geospatialanalyses;assist in the collection, compilation, evaluation, interpretation, maintenance and distribution of spatial and non-spatial data(and metadata) through IWMI's Water Data Portal while also adhering to the Institute's and international standards; and
  • perform other related assignments as required.
You must possess:
  • a bachelor's degree in information management, geography, agriculture or water resources, with a focus on database andinformation management;at least 3 years of relevant professional experience at an entry-level position in the field of GIS/RS;
  • strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills; anda positive attitude, a solid work ethic, and a demonstrated capacity to learn new technologies as well as take on additionalresponsibilities over time.
You must also be:
  • self-motivated, enthusiastic and be able to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team; andcommitted and reliable, with good organizational skills and time management.
You must have knowledge of:
  • the challenges posed by environmental impacts on global change, on the one hand, and rapidly developing GIS/RS techniques,on the other;
  • Esri's ArcGIS and associated extensions, Erdas Imagine, ENVI, QGIS, MapInfo, etc.; and
  • metadata standards and platforms.This is a nationally recruited staff position and only Sri Lankan citizens are encouraged to apply.
