OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
I.Background
The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP) is UNESCO'sfirst education-related category 1 institute in the Asia and the Pacific region towards the development andpromotion of new approaches to education for a more peaceful and sustainable world. The Institute aims tocontribute to the conceptualization, design and formulation of regional and sub-regional strategies ineducation for peace and sustainable development, in particular through South-South and triangular North-South-South cooperation.
II. Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Director of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace andSustainable Development, the incumbent shall assist in the implementation and management ofprogramme of MGIEP based in New Delhi, in particular:
  • Contribute to the implementation of the communication strategy by coordinating and preparing materialswhich promote greater understanding and support for the Institute.
  • Identify activities and events that maybe of interest to the MGIEP public and ensure that these activities are included in the MGIEPcommunication plan. He/She will also assist the Director in the production of the MGIEP Newsletter (threeissues per year).
  • Work closely with the web master and with other MGIEP programme units and carry out quality controlexercise to the classification of content contributed by all MGIEP Units.
  • The incumbent will coordinate and oversee the content of MGIEP Web site in particular the editorialsection.
  • This includes writing of new materials in MGIEP style, ensure quality in updating the home page aswell as the various sections in the site, translating and revising translations of materials prepared for theweb where necessary and preparing various support materials such as feature stories with specialattention to creative writing, compelling story-telling, regional balance and organizational and culturalsensitivities.
  • Organize the Editorial Committee meetings; collect articles from authors, edit received articles and ensuretheir compliance with the editorial strategy decided by the Committee; organize the translation and editingin the three languages with MGIEP colleagues or with external translators; work closely with the graphicdesigner on the iconographic work and coordinate with MGIEP partners to extend the linguistic coverageof the Newsletter; monitor the effect of MGIEP's dissemination and outreach activities and contribute tothe MGIEP visibility report.
  • Process, design and disseminate press releases and other documents to MGIEP partners: The incumbentwill establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication channels with mass mediarepresentatives, news services, editors, etc. to encourage accurate and favourable reporting of theInstitute's activities. He/she will identify public information needs and opportunities.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
  • Advanced university degree (equivalent to Masters) in journalism, communications, public relations orother related fields.
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • One to two years of experience in journalism, communications, public relations or other related fields;international experience is desirable.
SKILLS/COMPETENCIES
  • Sound knowledge and experience of working with the media and web-based communication.
  • Excellent theoretical knowledge and experience related to planning, executing and monitoring publiccommunications.
  • Strong written, spoken and conceptual communication skills.
  • Skill in developing sources for researchand ability to rapidly analyse and integrate diverse information from various sources.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish excellent working relationship with multiculturalteam and the wider community.Ability to plan, prioritize and organize work.
  • Demonstrate resourcefulness, initiative, maturity, tact andadvocacy skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to organize, assess and coordinate the work of others.
  • Ability to develop, supervise and evaluate complex advocacy/media campaigns with excellentpromotional and publicity tools and techniques would be an asset.
  • Advanced computer skills and the use of relevant software and other applications such as Pack MSOffice, Databases, Dreamweaver, Internet including web 2.0; knowledge of DTP software andPhotoshop are desirable.
LANGUAGES
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language would beconsidered as an asset.

UNESCO's salaries are calculated in US dollars and exempt from income tax. They consist of a basic salary and a postadjustment which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station and exchange rates.Other benefits include: 30 days annual leave, family allowance, home travel, education grant for dependent children,pension plan and medical insurance.
