Organizational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services and strengthen environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This post is located in the UNEP/DEPI Office at the Nairobi duty station.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Chief of Ecosystems Services Economics Unit, the incumbent will perform the following duties:
1. Identify emerging issues concerning the management of ecosystem and provide technical and policy advice and guidance through the following tasks:
a) Carry out research and prepare conceptual, strategy papers and guidelines relating to the sustainable management of ecosystem services,
b) Develop and manage projects in the field of sustainable management of ecosystem services,
c) Contribute to the organization of capacity building activities undertaken by the Unit and the Division, with specific focus on the sustainable management of ecosystem services.
d) Liaise within UNEP and other relevant partners in managing projects; and prepare reports and other publications based on outcomes of the projects and disseminate them to governments and other relevant stakeholders.
2). Coordinate activities related to the sustainable management of ecosystem services, with particular focus on the follow-up to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), economic instruments and valuation, and provide technical and policy advice and guidance through the following tasks:
a) Liaise within UNEP and other relevant partners in managing projects, particularly concerning the follow up to the MA, economic instruments and valuation.
b) Contribute to the development and implementation of projects relating to the follow-up to the MA, economic instruments and valuation.
c) Prepare reports and other publications based on outcomes of the projects and disseminate them to governments and other relevant stakeholders, including processes related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).
d) Provide substantive support to the organization of international expert meetings, seminars, workshops, and symposia related to the work of the Unit and DEPI, in particular, those related to the follow up to the MA, economic instruments and valuation.
3. Provide general support to the delivery of DEPI Programme of Work, through the following activities: a) Assist in the development and formulation of policies, strategies and Programme of Work of the Unit and DEPI.
b) Provide support to the Chief of the Unit in carrying out and reporting on the progress and output of the Programme of Work.
c) Assist in coordinating activities related to budget and funding and prepare related documents reports.
d) Prepare appropriate technical and progress reports on the activities of the Unit and DEPI for use by UNEP management as necessary.
e) Prepare other materials including briefing notes, outreach materials responding to memos and other correspondences, as well as the compilation of other Division-wide inputs and reports as necessary.
f) Represent the Unit or DEPI at UNEP HQ coordination meetings and other meetings as necessary.
g) Organize and participate in international expert meetings, seminars, workshops, and symposia related to the work of the Unit and DEPI.
4. Undertake other activities and duties as assigned by the Chief of the Unit and the Division Director.

Planning & Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
Education
An advanced University degree (Master's degree or higher) in economics, ecosystems management, Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, economic instruments or other related field. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience in project management related to the field of international environmental policy. Experience in managing projects concerning sound ecosystems management of the environment, with focus at the national level desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position will include a substantive assessment which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
