RESPONSIBILITIES
The post is located in the Office of the President of the Human Rights Council. The incumbent of this post performs the following duties and responsibilities under the overall guidance of the President of the Human Rights Council: Focal point for the overall support to the President, directing the work of her or his Office; Reviewing draft statements and assisting the President in all her or his consultations; Organizing and preparing substantive documentation relating to various meetings, Drafting statements and assisting the President in her or his consideration of legal matters, Follows up on HRC resolutions and decisions; Ensures liaison and cooperation of the HRC with other human rights bodies, mechanisms and procedures; Collects, compiles and processes information requested by the HRC; Drafts documents and prepares other substantive inputs to support the activities of the HRC, including background notes, studies, analyses on specific issues; Facilitates the dissemination of information on all aspects of the HRC activities and procedures to representatives of Governments, permanent missions, inter-governmental organisations, United Nations funds, programmes and specialised agencies, national human rights institutions (NHRIs), NGOs and other civil society entities; Represents the Office of the President at meetings requiring substantive and technical expertise related to the incumbent's functions; Performs such other duties as may be directed by the President.
COMPETENCIES
Professionalism: Comprehensive knowledge of, and exposure to, a range of human rights issues, to include approaches and techniques to address sensitive and complex problems; very good knowledge of institutional mandates, policies and guidelines related to human rights. Good analytical and research skills, including ability to evaluate and integrate information from a variety of sources. Very good knowledge of the inter-governmental human rights machinery and procedures.
Planning and organizational skills: Ability to establish priorities and to plan work assignments, juggle competing demands and work under pressure of frequent and tight deadlines; ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given
Teamwork: Ability to interact and to establish and maintain effective working relations as a team member, with individuals of different national and cultural backgrounds.
Communication: Excellent communication skills, including the ability to convey complex concepts and recommendations at senior level, both orally and in writing, in a clear and concise style.
Leadership: Ability to plan and organise own work, as well as to manage, coach and oversee more junior Professional staff and support staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Advanced university degree in law, political science, international relations or other discipline related to human rights. A combination of relevant academic qualifications and extensive experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience: A minimum of seven years' professional experience in human rights, international relations or related field, five of which at least at the international level.
Languages: Fluency in English or French; Spanish is an asset.
