Organizational Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the Medical Services Section, Human Resources Management Service, Division of Administration, United Nations Office at Geneva. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Medical Services Section and to the Medical Officers.
Responsibilities
  • Responds to emergency calls and assists Medical Officers in providing adequate care; ensures effective liaison between patient and private doctor, paramedics, family members, and colleagues as appropriate; documents case findings.
  • Performs diagnostic and screening tests such as: ECG, x-rays, laboratory (blood and urine), and other tests as required.
  • Performs clinical assessment of patients visiting the walk-in clinic; provides care/advice accordingly or facilitates referral to the UN Medical Officer or to an outside physician, as indicated.
  • Ensures preparedness of staff travelling on missions or reassignments, including administration of appropriate vaccine, instructions on malaria prophylaxis and other travel-related ailments. Instructs on the content and potential uses of the travel kit.
  • Assists in providing health education and health promotion programs; participates in work environment assessment, addresses other occupational health issues.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Competencies
Professionalism:
  • Knowledge of clinical, occupational and travel nursing. Instructor's Certificate in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support is an asset. Knowledge of major medical office equipment and ability to use them in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of basic diagnostic equipment and ability to use them.
  • Knowledge of modern medical information technology and solid computer skill.

Education
  • Registered Professional Nurse who is a graduate or an accredited Diploma Programme (3 years). Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away.
Work Experience
  • At least 7 years of experience in nursing.
  • Good knowledge of UN system and experience with medical facilities in an international setting is an asset.
  • Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the high school or secondary school diploma.
Languages
  • Fluency in French and English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
  • A written assessment may be conducted. Successfull candidates will be invited to a competency based interview.

Extension of the appointment is subject to Extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
  • Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
  • An impeccable record for integrity and professional ethical standards is essential. All staff of the Ethics Office are required to submit a financial disclosure statement upon appointment and annually thereafter.

  • These posts are financed by the Support Account for Peacekeeping Operations. Extension of appointment will be subject to budgetary approval.
  • This position is vacant due to the temporary assignment/secondment of the regular incumbent to another office/organization. The selection and extension of appointment of the selected candidate will be contingent on the return of the incumbent who maintains a lien against this post. If the selected candidate is an internal staff member of the UN Secretariat, the selection will be recorded as a temporary assignment.
