Merlin in the Union of Myanmar Merlin established an organisational presence in Myanmar in 2004, operating under a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health. Merlin implements programmes in the Delta region, in Shan State and in Chin State and Sagaing Region with a country head office in Yangon. Merlin works with remote and isolated communities or communities affected by disasters and over the years Merlin has trained volunteer health workers and village health committees on the topics of TB, Malaria, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion (WASH) and Maternal and child health in order to improve access to basic health care. All of these are carried out as community based activities where improving access to health care and changing behaviour patterns operate side by side. Altogether Merlin supports over 1400 community volunteers in around 1200 villages across 7 Townships: Homalin, Tamu and Kalay in Sagaing; Hakha and Thantlaing in Chin; Laputta Township in Ayerwaddy Division; Kutkai in Shan State.
General description of the role The translator will translate written documents from English into Myanmar and from Myanmar into English. In some cases, the translator might also act as an interpreter to provide oral translation during meetings as required.
Specific roles and responsibilities Translation will be from English to Myanmar and from Myanmar to English as requested. Most documents will be health related documents and therefore a very good grasp of health terminology. However there are other less technical documents that might require to be translated. From time to time, the translator might be requested to act as an interpreter. The expected turnaround rate for documents would be 48 hrs for each 10 pages. The translator will be expected to be: reading through original material and rewriting it in the target language, ensuring that the meaning of the source text is retained; researching legal, technical and scientific phraseology to find the correct translation; proactively liaising with Merlin to discuss any unclear points; proofreading and editing final translated versions; providing clients with a grammatically correct, well-expressed final version of the translated text, usually as a word-processed document; prioritising work to meet deadlines;

Person Specification Essential Qualifications, experience and competences:
  • Strong experience as a translator both from English to Myanmar and from Myanmar to English
  • Experience of translating health documents and documents with technical vocabulary
  • Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English
  • Excellent written and spoken Myanmar
  • Need to have access to email and phone as requested
  • Ability and willingness to keep information confidential
  • Ability to respond to urgent demands and deliver within short period of time Confident and proficient in the use of MS Office, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint] Experience of a flexible approach to managing and prioritising a high workload and multiple tasks in a fast paced environment with tight deadlines Experience of proactively identifying and addressing issues
