TERMS OF REFERENCE
Individual contractor Support to the implementation of COP11 decisions on the Committee on Science and Technology (CST)
A. Background
The eleven session of the UNCCD Conference of the Parties decided in September 2013, in Windhoek, Namibia, to establish a Science Policy Interface (SPI) to facilitate a two way science-policy dialogue and ensure delivery of policy-relevant information, knowledge and advice on desertification/land degradation and drought. As the COP11 requested the CST bureau to ensure follow-up action on this matter, the first meeting of the CST11 bureau is planned to be held end of January 2014, in Bonn, Germany. Its first task will be to agree on the various steps to be undertaken for the establishment of the SPI, including on the development of its Terms of Reference and modality of selection of its members.
B. Tasks
Under the guidance of the Coordinator of the Knowledge Management, Science and Technology unit (KMST), the contractor will be required to undertake the following activities:
- To prepare relevant documentation for the CST Bureau meeting, including the draft agenda in line with COP11 decision, to take notes during the meeting, to prepare the draft report of the CST bureau meeting and to support its follow-up actions;
- To prepare substantive draft documents to support the agenda item on the SPI;
- In line with COP11 decisions and in cooperation with KMST staff, to review and update the design and content of the CST and Science related webpages of the UNCCD website; to follow-up accordingly on the knowledge management taskforce;
- To support the Coordinator on any other tasks as required. First university degree;
- Minimum two years of working experience;
- Experience or knowledge of the UNCCD process is highly desirable;
- Ability to gather and synthesize information and very good drafting skills;
- Proven organizational skills;
- Very good knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and use of the Internet as a research tool;
- Fluency in English. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an asset.

Terms The contractor shall work in the UNCCD secretariat in Bonn, Germany, for a period of 3 months, beginning 18 November 2013 to 15 February 2014. The fees for this contract are negotiable and will be based on years of relevant experience.
