Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is in the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC), and reports to a
Statistician of the Cost-of-Living Division.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, Statistics Assistant will be responsible for research, compilation, processing, and analysis of data related to the calculation of post adjustment indices, and assisting in methodological research connected with cost-of-living measurements.
In particular, the Statistics Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
Research, Compilation, Entry and Processing of Data sets:
1. The incumbent creates and processes data sets compiled from several types of survey questionnaires and data collection forms for preparation of statistical tables and graphic displays; checks consistency of data queries; tests for comparability and validity of data;
2. Using a comparatively wide variety of statistical processes converts data sets into variety of forms, such as index series, ratios, estimates and projections;
3. Studies and examines skewed results, investigates possible causes of such results and deviations, and prepare reports explaining findings;
4. Creates and updates databases, export relevant data to spreadsheets, modifies control process for computer programmes for data analyses;
5. Maintains, modifies, and interrogates statistical databases on-line and in-batch processing modes.
Preparation of materials for Reports:
1. Compiles tables, charts, graphic displays from processed data for cost-of-living reports and analyses;
2. Defines processes to achieve specific outputs, modifies control processes according to specifications for data analyses, test and revises programmes under the supervision of a professional programmer and produces required computer outputs;
3. Assists in designing and modifying questionnaires and other data-collection forms;
4. Assists in designing and modifying presentations for ACPAQ and ICSC.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent. Studies/courses at the secondary level in statistics are desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of 7 years of experience in the field of statistics or related area. Experience in the field of cost-of-living measurement is desirable.
Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the high school or secondary school diploma.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French and/or
Spanish is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Shortlisted candidates may be assessed through competency based interviews.

Recruitment for this position is done on a local basis, whether or not the candidate is a resident of the duty station.
Passing the New York Statistical Examination (SAE) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration for this position.
Passing the Administrative Assessment Support Test (ASAT) at Headquarters or an equivalent recognised locally-administered test at a United Nations Office is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Service category in the United Nations Secretariat.
Staff Members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
