Additional information on the compensation package is provided on the WTO website: The Secretariat of the WTO is seeking to fill a position of a Statistician in the Statistics Group of the Economic Research and Statistics Division. General Functions
Under the supervision of the Head of International Trade Statistics Section, the incumbent will undertake the following:
1. Collect, compile and analyse statistical information from a variety of sources following WTO data requirements; constantly seek ways to improve the analytical relevance of the indicators and the completeness and precision of the data in the databases.
2. Undertake statistical research and prepare analytical papers (reports, working papers, etc.).
3. Ensure that databases under his/her responsibility are accurately maintained and regularly updated. Undertake analytical work and reporting on the data.
4. Understand the use of large data sets and the nomenclatures used in classifying trade. Support analytical work in his/her area of expertise and prepare guidelines defining statistical procedures.
5. Support research assistants to help them enhance their expertise.
6. Assist in providing technical assistance and professional advice to WTO Members and colleagues in the Secretariat.
7. Keep up-to-date with best practices and leverage the availability of statistics working with external counterparts, including international organizations such as the UN, OECD, World Bank and IMF as well as keeping abreast with research on quantitative trade analysis.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Advanced university degree or equivalent in a quantitative subject such as mathematics, statistics or economics.
Knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge of statistical concepts such as those used in national accounts, balance of payments and international trade statistics.
- Familiarity with the main concepts used in trade and international economics and the relevant trade indicators.
- Good understanding of the WTO system.
- Good IT skills of use for statistical analysis and database/information management;
- good quantitative analytical skills;
- good research and proven drafting skills (e.g. reports, background papers, working papers, papers to be published in academic journals);
- presentation skills;
- and the ability to organize his/her work and work in team.
Work Experience:
Minimum 2 years' relevant professional experience; a publication track record would be an advantage.
Languages:
Proficiency in English and working knowledge of French. Knowledge of Spanish would be an advantage.
