INTRODUCTION
The Chinese unit is one of the seven language units in the Official Documentation Branch (OFFDOC). The main purpose of the Branch is to translate, revise and edit official ILO documents and publications (including Governing Body documents, Conference reports, and regional and sectoral meeting reports) in order to ensure a high level of linguistic quality while strictly complying with the established deadlines. The Chinese unit discharges the task of translating into Chinese and revising/editing the said documents. The Senior Translator/Reviser works under the supervision of the Head of the Chinese Unit.
Description of Duties
Specific duties
1. Carry out and revise translations of highly sensitive texts and approve finished translations of exceptionally difficult or complex character in the target language. Translate and/or revise and/or edit texts that cannot be assigned to other staff owing to urgency, confidentiality or importance. Take decisions, where necessary, on linguistic questions concerning the Chinese language.
2. Take charge of the operation of the Unit in the absence of the chief.These specific duties are aligned with the relevant ILO generic job description, which includes the following generic duties:
1. Revise in the target language from two or more languages translations prepared by other staff and by external translators.
2. Translate, from two languages, and self-revise especially complex and technical texts for issue without further revision.
3. Edit texts in the target language to ensure a style of presentation in conformity with ILO standards.
4. Produce versions in the target language which are in terms of accuracy, completeness, meaning, style and effectiveness, the equivalent of the original text. Conduct supplementary research to solve problems of terminology and meaning,and consult with substantive units regarding possible inconsistencies or errors in the original text.
5. Carry out linguistic research and prepare terminological bulletins and glossaries and other reference tools.
6. May organize and coordinate the work of other translators of the same language unit, monitoring the progress of work in relation to an agreed schedule or coordinating the work for simultaneous issue before or during a meeting.
Required Qualifications
Education
Advanced university degree in languages or some other relevant field. Degree/diploma in one or more labor subjects would be an asset. Translators must also be assessed in a competitive framework in the occupational field, which may if necessary include an examination.
Experience
At least seven years of professional experience of which at least three years at the international level.
Languages
Excellent command of Chinese. Good knowledge of two ILO working languages (English, French, Spanish). The knowledge of other languages will be considered as an asset.
Competencies
Ability to use the most appropriate range of vocabulary and professional, scientific or technical concepts and terms. A high degree of knowledge and understanding of a wider range of subjects and ability to make judgements on technical issues related to assigned work item. Excellent language translation skills, excellent drafting ability in the official's mother tongue language, and proven revision ability. Good knowledge of the subject matter dealt with by the organization. Ability to plan and organize work. Ability to present information in readily understandable forms. Knowledge of and experience utilizing computers including word processing and database software, and ability to use computer based terminological and information tools. Ability to guide and train lower level staff. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work on own initiative as well as a member of a team. Ability to maintain good relations with other work units. The ability to work in a multicultural environment and gender-sensitive behaviour and attitudes are also required.
Additional Information:
Evaluation (which may include one or several written tests and a pre-interview competency-based assessment centre) and the interviews are expected to take place between November 2013 and January 2014.
