Basic purpose
Under the general supervision of a Scientist, plan the implementation of experiments and other research studies and conduct them as specified / defined in the research outline. Collect and analyze data. Work closely together with collaborating partners. Contribute to data analysis and the preparation of manuscripts for reports, publications and presentations posters. Assist in training activities.
Manage a range of field based instrumentation for soil and irrigation water monitoring. This will include both monitoring of data integrity and maintenance of equipment and wireless communications, as well as management of irrigation rates and scheduling.
Roles and responsibilities
- Plan the implementation of routine experiments in the field of intensification and mechanization of diversified rice-based cropping systems to support projects goals of the Organizational Unit's (OU's) research objectives related to developing scientifically sound agronomic solutions to risks facing food security
- Coordinate with collaborators on their research activities as required
- Plan the support/ manpower needed and set up work schedule
- Prepare the material and equipment needed based on research outline
- Assist in verifying and/or applying methods/techniques that will assist the successful implementation of the experiment
- Assist in supervising the implementation of experiments and/or other research studies in the field ofmechanized, intensified and diversified rice-based cropping systems-Oversee the work of research technician and/or contract workers to ensure that research activities are implemented according to plan and specific standards
- Coordinate with collaborating OUs to ensure the timely supply of material needed for the study
- Contribute to the maintenance of research areas and direct the maintenance of technical equipment (upgrade/repair/ replace)
- Collect and analyze research data in the field of cropping system water use and agronomic input efficiency in intensified and mechanized diversified rice-based cropping systems
- Collect and process data to its required form-Identify inconsistencies in the data collection and/or missing information-Carry out graphical and basic statistical data analysis
- Update database for storage and retrieval of information/data collected*Contribute to the preparation of reports and publications, and presentations in the field of spatial variation in soil water, crop performance and crop use efficiency of agronomic inputs-Provide appropriate data and information about experiment(s)/research study
- Contribute to manuscripts/write —ups for annual reports and publications in refereed journals as well aspresentation/posters for national and international conferences*Support the training of scholars and on-the-job trainees as required-Act as resource person for training courses and visitors
- People Management-Supervise the work of Research Technicians-Provide feedback on performance of Research Technicians to immediate supervisor-Assist students and trainees
- Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisor from time to time
- Manage, update and implement technologies in crop management aimed at improving resource use efficiency
- Identify and implement suitable equipment and instrumentation for improving the efficiency of the mechanized and intensified cropping systems being developed at IRRI as part of the EcologicalIntensification platform.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Engineering or related field
- Minimum 2 years of relevant work experience in research and data management

- Is familiar with quality control tools
- Has proven technical proficiency in conducting research experiments-Has strong analytical skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite software good understanding of electronics and instrumentation
- Attention to detail-Strong problem solving skills-Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to anticipate problems and take decisive action-ArcGIS software Basic programming to enable interfacing with data-loggers Basic understanding of database management
