Organizational Setting and Reporting
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations. The ECLAC Human Resources Section internship is for 2-6 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department. Candidates may be selected throughout the posting period, on an 'as-needed' basis.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work for five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Under the general guidance of the Chief of the Human Resources Section and the direct supervision of the Human Resources Officers, the intern will assist in implementing various initiatives in collaboration with the Recruitment, Staff Administration and Training Units.
1) Learning/Training Activities
(a) Provide support to Training Unit – IT and administrative support
  • Provide assistance with the new Learning Management System
  • Provide assistance with the setup of a Social Collaboration Community for training purposes
  • Support the re-branding efforts of the training unit (creating invitations, calendars of events, etc.)
(b) Provide support to Training Unit – Regular Language classes
  • Install and check equipments for the classes;
  • Verify the availability of rooms for every class;
  • Provide assistance to teachers to prepare the material for language classes;
  • Provide assistance in keeping record of the attendance of the regular language classes;
  • Respond to queries by phone or e-mails to students as required;
  • Assist Assistant with electronic data entry in IMIS and end of Month Summaries for the training classes.
(c) Provide support to Training Unit – Training courses in ECLAC and outside the premises
  • Organize and deliver the material required for the courses;
  • Set up the equipments in the rooms and install software as required;
  • In the case of courses outside ECLAC, prepare the equipments and materials that must be carried to the place of the event;
  • Set up the equipments and deliver materials for the courses;
  • Keep information filed and updated available;
  • During the absence of the Training Assistant schedule videoconference, request rooms for training and prepare the material necessary for the session.
(d) Provide Support during exam periods: Language final course exams/YPP (Young Professionals Programme)
Check that the audio equipments work properly;
Assist in the supervision of staff members/participants sitting the exams.
2) Recruitment
  • Design a communication strategy to attract more female applicants for mid and senior-level management positions, using the UN Careers brand, in order to increase gender parity
  • Update the Employment Opportunities web page for ECLAC, using the UN Careers branding
  • Update the materials for job and career fairs
  • Formalize an 'Intern Appreciation Ceremony', to include a group photo
  • Assist in the evaluation of eligible candidates, using the Peoplesoft-based talent management system.
  • Monitor Key Performance Indicators (Female representation, Geographic representation, and Time-to-Fill) using the HR Management Scorecard based on Oracle Analytics software.
  • Analyze the timeline for hiring of Consultants and Contractors and identify trends.
- Update the Applicant Registration database

Education
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) in the areas of human resources management or public administration or business administration;
  • or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • Advanced knowledge of Spanish (both oral and written) is required for the Internship Programme. Intermediate knowledge of English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
