Organizational Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the Carpet Shop, Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities Management Service (FMS), Facilities and Commercial Services Division (FCSD), Office of Central Support Services (OCSS), Department of Management. The incumbent reports to the General Foreman of MAU and Foreman of the Carpet Shop.
Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the General Foreman of the Maintenance and Alteration Unit (MAU), and the direct supervision of the Foreman of the Carpet Shop, the Leadman/Working Leader is responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of carpets, tiles, and flooring throughout the UN Complex and offsite leased premises.
Major responsibilities are:
  • assist the Foreman in carrying out the daily operations of the Carpet shop;
  • ensure that the carpets and carpet tiles installations throughout the UN complex measure up to the highest standards possible and are installed with minimum amount of material waste; perform periodic inspections of the carpet, tiles, and flooring throughout the UN Complex and offsite leased premises; repair of existing installations when necessary;
  • In regard to new installations, measure the area, plan the layout, inspect the area to be carpeted, check for any imperfections in the surface of the floor, and fill in cracks if necessary;
  • install carpeting, including wall to wall carpeting, carpet tiles, stairs and upholster platforms with carpet as needed;
  • assist the Foreman in managing work orders received through the iNeed system, delegate the work of the carpet shop and record close-outs in the system upon job completion, periodically inspects the carpets throughout the UN Complex and report any tripping hazard to the Foreman;
  • supervise the carpet shop staff as well as coordinate and oversee the work of outside contractors to ensure completion to UN standards.
  • In the absence of the Foreman, responsible for the daily operations of the Carpet shop including keeping records of time and materials used on installations performed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Education
High school or equivalent Trade School Diploma.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience as a skilled craftsman in the field of general building maintenance, installation and repair of carpets, tiles and flooring, or a related area, is required. Experience in supervising is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other official UN language is an advantage.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified applicants may include a written/Technical test assessment, which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
