Job Category: Software Engineering: Development
Location: Redmond, WA, US
Job ID: 849319-121684
Division: Windows Division

Description

How often do you get the opportunity to work on a product that will impact and transform millions of people’s lives? SkyDrive is a cloud-based storage service that makes it simple to save, access, share, collaborate, and backup your files across all of your devices. With deep integration into Windows, Windows Phone, Office, XBOX, and other platforms, SkyDrive will preserve your files beyond the life of your devices and make your files accessible and sharable from anywhere, anytime. The competitors in this space are very well known and include Apple with iCloud, Google with Google Drive, Amazon with Cloud Drive, and Dropbox.

SkyDrive is used by hundreds of millions of people, from across the globe, and is emerging as a 3rd party developer platform. The challenge with our service is to continue its insane growth while continuing to evolve the service. It’s like working on a jet engine while the airplane is flying at 600 MPH. We have deep experience in what it takes to run a service at large scale and we are continuing to invest heavily in the infrastructure it takes to support the service.

As a developer on the SkyDrive team, you will work with your counterparts in program management, test, and service engineering to design, implement, stabilize, and monitor new end-user features and capabilities within the service. You will also work on the infrastructure it takes to engineer and run the SkyDrive service at global scale. You will work with smart people and have an incredible opportunity to learn and grow. Best of all, your work will reach millions of people.

The SkyDrive Cloud Services team has vertical feature teams and infrastructure/architectural feature teams. Our vertical feature teams build broad capabilities across the entire service (front-end and back-end). These developers have broad exposure to the whole service. Our infrastructure/architectural teams focus on specific parts of the service and have a bit more narrow, but deeper domain knowledge of their area. These teams own the lower level aspects of the service such as storage, protocols, monitoring, continuous testing, continuous release, deployment, data center build out, performance, costs, capacity, security, etc.

We also deliver the fast and beautiful HTML5 Web experience for SkyDrive.Com. Domain specific technologies here include HTML5, JavaScript, JSON, jQuery, CSS, and C#/ASP.NET. The SkyDrive back-end service host one of the world’s largest hierarchical, permissioned file systems; providing structured storage, blob storage, synchronization, protocols, and security. The back-end system is consumed by a wide-array of partners. Our back-end technologies include C#, SQL Server, Azure, networking, distributed systems, and deep understanding of Windows. Applicants should have familiarity with some of these technologies.

A BS or MS in Computer Science is required. A minimum of 3 years of demonstrated commercial software development experience is required for all of our open positions. Again, it’s important that you are either currently a developer or have very recent developer experience in the areas mentioned above.
We are looking for people with a ton of passion, people with desire to try big things, people who have a lot of curiosity and can go deep into the lowest layer of a complex system. We want people who want to learn new things, and people who have a clear customer point-of-view. We are looking for people who use and love SkyDrive. The most important trait we look for is raw passion for technology and for the space that we are in with SkyDrive. We want people who are fanatical about the cloud, who use SkyDrive or even the competitors’ products, and who want to change the game by working on SkyDrive.
