Are you passionate about turning concepts into reality through product development? Do you want to create something new, something innovative that people discover they cannot live without? Do you work best in a frameless environment with plenty of ambiguity? Do you have the ability and drive to bridge the gap between research and product engineering? If so, read on.
The Applied Science Group helps to create the future of Microsoft’s hardware and software businesses. ASG has a position that is rare at Microsoft and it demands only the top visionary and technical talent. ASG seeks a creative, broadly skilled and applied engineer who possesses a talent for unconventional thinking and a track record of bringing innovative ideas to fruition. The ideal candidate will be intelligent, collaborative, determined and capable of guiding novel technologies into products. The person sought is excited, passionate, and driven to make a positive impact in people’s lives. They have a vision and want to carry it.
The mechanical or manufacturing engineer joining ASG will apply novel technologies that advance the form and functionality of user interfaces and mobile computing platforms. The successful candidate will develop designs suitable for prototyping and volume manufacture. He or she will work with a team of researchers spanning computer vision, optics, electronics and materials science. The goal is to create next generation hardware and user experiences that take advantage of advances in materials, optics, and human interface engineering. The devices developed will know where they are in the world and enable a rich input/output framework.
The successful candidate will possess a good eye for identifying multi-faceted issues and areas for investigation, the creativity to generate and deliver compelling solutions to problems, and the ability to quickly test and express these solutions in functional prototypes that showcase the technology to its best advantage. He or she will interact with multiple groups and disciplines within Microsoft, and will be comfortable having substantive conversations on technical, user experience, and business matters.
The creative freedom and self-direction inherent in this job requires someone with the judgment to select the best concepts to pursue and manage their time appropriately. The ideal candidate will thrive in a team of capable, motivated people who have high expectations of each other.
