Position: Afterschool Tutor

Position term: September 14th – December 19 th , 2012
Hours: Wednesday or Thursday, 3-5pm (one day per week required)
Background:
Since its inception in 1999, the Refugee Youth Program has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to provide refugee youth with year-round academic support, literacy training, and enrichment activities. The Refugee Youth Program enables refugee and immigrant youth to participate in a comprehensive after school programs that provides English language training, academic support, and additional culturally and linguistically appropriate learning activities.
Scope of Work:
Youth tutors promote English language learning and academic achievement by assisting Tibetan elementary students with their homework, English conversation skills and regularly reviewing student progress. Visual arts programming is provided by our partner program, ASTEP, and tutors are expected to assist the lead instructors with classroom management as needed.
Essential Position Functions
  • Assist refugee youth with homework and creative arts projects
  • Facilitate or participate in cultural and academic enrichment activities with refugee youth
  • Aid in behavior management that promotes policies and practices necessary to create a productive learning environment
  • Work and communicate consistently with IRC staff, volunteers, and school personnel as needed
  • Other related duties as assigned
Requirements
  • Current Bachelors of Education student, or undergraduate in a related field
  • Experience with elementary school-aged children preferred
  • Reliable and flexible
  • Participate in an IRC Youth Program Orientation and Trainings
  • Experience & commitment to working with youth, preferably English Language Learners
  • Willing to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of clients
  • Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English
  • Proficiency in second language desirable, particularly Tibetan, Hindi, and Nepali
  • Available for a minimum of one program day per week
