Description
The Director, Finance, Accounting and Planning directs the Amnesty International USA accounting department and s/he is responsible for that department’s staffing and management, ensuring appropriate audit controls, effective processing, management and regulatory reporting, and provision of analysis data.
The Director partners with the CFAO, the Amnesty Leadership team, and Executive management to continuously improve accounting systems, Amnesty staff knowledge and our relationships with our International partners.
The Director provides organizational leadership for GAAP compliant accounting practices, critical reporting for decision making; s/he is responsible for all accounting and auditing, budget preparation and management, payroll, tax filings and statutory reporting.
The Director is a member of AIUSA’s Leadership Team.
Responsibilities include:
- Direct the Accounting staff, structuring and defining work to ensure responsible controls and efficiency to allow timely monthly closing and reporting. Update and enhance finance policies, procedures and desk manuals.
- Conduct hiring, orientation and evaluation of staff members. Provide appropriate training and professional development, as appropriate.
- Maintain controls over all accounting functions.
- Recommend and report-out on benchmarking of operating performance. Recommend and implement financial systems enhancements.; investigate and recommend efficiencies in all functional areas
- Responsible for the accuracy of all internal reporting. Ensure timely, accurate month-end closings and oversee preparation of monthly financial statements.
- Direct the annual financial audits: plan, direct staff through preparation, review audit schedules.
- Ensure compliance with Federal. State and other reporting requirements. Coordinate completion of the annual 990 and other filings for executive approval.
- Work with the CFO and Amnesty staff to plan, coordinate and present the annual budget. Prepare monthly, quarterly and ad hoc budget reports and analyses for Executive staff and budget managers.
- Work with the CFO to develop a rolling 12-month cash sources and uses forecast; daily cash flow forecasting; develop capital budgets
- Ad hoc analyses, as needed
- Maintain close oversight of all investments for the organization, including restricted investments, reserves, and employee pension plans.
- Coordinate special projects, as assigned

Desired Skills & Experience
REQUIREMENTS:
- CPA or over 12 years experience in senior position (Finance Manager or Controller or higher) required.
- Ten years of progressive accounting responsibility in a fast-paced environment. Audit experience in a large public accounting firm working with non-profit clients preferred.
- Non-profit accounting experience required; GAAP, GAAS, IFRS preferred
- Management accounting experience required
- Strong financial systems experience required
- Highly skilled in conducting financial analysis that informs planning and operations
- Self-reliance with respect to office work: proficient in Microsoft Office and accounting software; Lotus Notes a plus
- Experience managing and maintaining a high-performing staff; experience directing staff toward completion of a project; record of meeting deadlines
- Experience with Union labor force a plus
- Project management skills a plus
- Strong attention to detail and deadlines
- Strong management reporting and presentation skills
- Strong teamwork
- Strong communication skills
- Must be highly organized and self directed
