Background
The IDB Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility (CSR) Program promotes Environmental and Social Responsibility within the Bank Community by aligning practices in all aspects of day-to-day operations with the Bank's overall sustainability goals and objectives; managing and reporting on the Bank's institutional environmental footprint; and providing ongoing education and awareness activities at Headquarters and through liaison with the Bank's Country Offices in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Consultancy objectives
The selected candidate will be expected to perform, among others, the following tasks, in accordance with his/her current work role:
Main activities
  • Overall coordination of all Bank efforts aimed at improving internal operations and making them more sustainable.
  • Working with senior Bank management to create an approach to and policy for Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility that is consistent with the Bank's mission and values and serves to create a positive message to the public and the Bank's internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serving in working groups that establish Bank-wide policies regarding environmental and social sustainability issues in the Bank's development projects.
  • Providing recommendations to Bank leadership on setting goals for lowered carbon emissions and formulate strategies for achieving those goals.
  • Providing support in managing the carbon neutral and greening initiative to calculate, offset through appropriate investments, and report on the GHG inventory and carbon footprint of the Bank.
  • Increasing management and staff awareness of the Bank's CSR mission through special awareness programs, special day events, symposia, discussions, training and networking with other IFIs and similar organizations.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with CSR managers at comparator institutions, and in academia, government, and professional and trade associations.
  • Staying abreast of changes in international GHG standards and reporting policies that may affect carbon markets as well as voluntary reporting protocols to which the Bank may subscribe.
  • Producing an annual report for the Bank on its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility efforts. Establish annual goals for enhancing the scope and compliance of the report with agreed-upon international standards.
  • Creating an internal 'Green Champions' Committee with a representative from each department and Country Office to enhance outreach and engagement across the entire Bank community.

Qualifications
  • Academic requirements: Degree in physical, life, or environmental science. MA in related field is desirable.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience managing environmental efforts for a large organization or college degree with minimum of 10 years managing environmental efforts for a large organization.
  • Areas of Expertise: Knowledge of corporate environmental and social responsibility in a multicultural context. Thorough understanding of greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory management, calculation and reporting and of worldwide carbon markets.
  • Languages: Spanish language proficiency is necessary.
Competencies
  • Effective at communicating ideas and strategy and explaining value delivered by CSR to senior executives.
  • Strong outreach and internal marketing skills. Ability to engage staff in CSR efforts and programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strong relationships, communicate effectively and work collaboratively with all levels of individuals inside and outside the organization.
  • Must be able to represent the organization with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Must have an established network within industry and/or government.
Payment and Conditions of Employment: the work will be carried out at Bank headquarters in Washington D.C. Remuneration will be determined in accordance with Bank regulations and criteria. The Bank will additionally contribute toward travel and moving expenses, if applicable. If a candidate is not a citizen or resident of the United States, the Bank will apply for a G-IV visa from the consulate of the United States in the candidate's country of origin. If a candidate cannot obtain a visa to work at the IDB the contractual offer will be rescinded.
Consanguinity:Individuals with relatives working for the IDB within, and including the fourth degree of consanguinity and the second degree of affinity are not eligible for employment as staff, consultants, or contractors through firms or agencies. Candidates must be citizens of a member country of the Inter‑American Development Bank.
