POSITION SUMMARY
The NC Sandhills Assistant Prescribed Fire Crew Manager participates in preserve operations, restoration, maintenance, and management. This may include the following functions:
- Participates in prescribed fire and wildfire activities, which may include: burn unit prep, fire operations, managing and training of staff and volunteers, maintenance of equipment and supplies, mop up, and monitoring. This will include weekend work.
- Participates in and manages restoration projects; this will include planting of long leaf pine seedlings, collecting of native plant seeds, and mechanical thinning projects. This will include weekend work.
- Maintains preserves and buildings, which may include: maintaining tools and equipment, repairing fences and gates, posting boundaries, and maintaining grounds and structures at historical sites.
The Assistant Prescribed Fire Crew Manager may assist on wildland fire operations in other parts of the Sandhills with federal, state, or private partners, or travel to other areas of the state or out-of-state to assist other TNC programs or partners on prescribed or wildland fires.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Assistant Prescribed Fire Crew Manager coordinates day-to-day activities of the prescribed fire crew and participates in wildland fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, etc. All TNC staff actively participating on a prescribed burn must be qualified as a FFT2. The Assistant Prescribed Fire Crew Manager will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring and other tasks. May perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
The Conservancy works to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community. This may include participation in wildland fire suppression activities in partnership with other non profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee, or as a volunteer or short term employee of the partner entity (such as an Administratively Determined, short term federal employee).

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Qualified NWCG Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) or Fire Fighter Type 1 (FFT1).
- Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment (type 6/7 engines, tractors, ATV's).
- Experience supervising staff.
- High school diploma and 1 to 2 years training in science-related field or related experience in land management.
- Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
- Experience to supervise a wide range of people (TNC staff and volunteers).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma and 1 - 2 years training in science-related field or related experience in land management. Prefer a Bachelor's degree in forestry, biology, ecology, natural resources management or related field, or active and ongoing study toward such a degree and/or two years related work experience or related experience in land management
- Qualified as or able to quickly meet qualifications for Firefighter Type 1 (Squad Boss). Requirements for FFT1 can be found in the Conservancy Fire Management Manual at: http://www.tncfiremanual.org/SquadBoss.htm.
- Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
- Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
- Ability to navigate to remote sites with maps, written directions, and GPS.
- Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.: chainsaw, ATV, tractor and implements, leaf blower, BK radio, hand tools, drip torch, etc.)
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions from co-workers.
- Ability to develop timeframes and then complete tasks within timeframes.
- Successful completion of the FFT2 task book
- Ability to operate and maintain various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner
- Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
- Ability to evaluate inputs in a rapidly changing work environment and make decisions that affect firefighters within squad.
- Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
- Ability to achieve physical fitness standard as set by local Fire Manager
- Obtain licenses and certifications related to first aid.
- Optional: Obtain related licenses or certifications such as CPR, herbicide application, driver's license.
- Optional: PC familiarity, including database knowledge, in order to maintain preserve records.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
- Employment term for this position is December 3, 2013 - May 23, 2014.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
The Assistant Prescribed Fire Crew Manager may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
- Present frequent possibility of injury.
- Require long hours in isolated settings.
- Require physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult and sometimes hazardous terrain.
- Require the ability to operate heavy machinery.
- Require the ability to pass the NWCG Pack Test' at the arduous level. Walk 3 miles in 45 minutes or less carrying a 45 pound pack on level terrain.
- Require willingness to travel frequently.
