Role Purpose: Lead and conduct high-quality economic research and analytical work; provide intellectual input in the policy research aspects related to IDB mandate and activities.
Key Accountabilities and Activities:
  • Provide high quality research and high-impact analytical work on complex economic development issues facing
  • member countries;
  • Lead economic work on binding constraints to economic growth and development in member countries;
  • Keep abreast of current developments in the field of international development economics to identify challenges and assess their risks to member countries and IDB;
  • Develop timely and distinctive IDB responses to global and
  • regional
  • issues affecting member countries.
  • Lead teams to undertake complex tasks and provide intellectual input into economic studies and regional economic outlooks;
  • Lead the technical preparation of annual publications, flagship reports and major department's
  • events (Symposia, Expert Group Meetings, seminars and workshops).
  • Liaise with IDB departments and entities to share economic knowledge and ensure that research findings of the Chief Economist Complex feed into the operations activities of IDB Group.
  • Develop, guide and disseminate economic work on member countries' economies, forecast future trends and recommend policy options;
  • Assume the role of research catalyst for interested economists and mentor more junior economists;
  • Ensure that key topics from the stakeholders' perspective are incorporated in the analytical work program of the Department;
  • Support the Chief Economist as needed, including with respect to the Research and knowledge sharing agenda of the CEC.
  • Encourage the sharing of economic knowledge across the regions in which IDB operates and participate in Communities of Practice and other IDB Knowledge Management activities;
  • Liaise with other departments within IDB as well as other international and regional development institutions in sharing and disseminating research information and to produce high-quality economic research;
  • Initiate and contribute to new knowledge products to support the transformation of IDB Group into a Knowledge based Institution;
  • Collaborate with various departments in the Operations Complex, other multilateral developments banks (MDBs) and stakeholders to generate operationally relevant knowledge and new insights in selected areas;
  • Represent IDB at high level international and regional fora on global economic issues and prospects.
Experience: Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience
Qualifications: Ph.D. in
  • Economics from a recognized university
Required skills and competencies:
  • Recognized expert in the field of international
  • and/or development economics, with very good command of econometric applications;
  • Demonstrated ability to translate highly complex economic analysis into policy advice to different stakeholders;
  • Strong communications ability.
  • Substantive knowledge of macroeconomic theory and principles supported by sound publications record;
  • Substantive senior professional experience in research institutes/ research departments of international financial or development organizations is highly desirable;
  • Familiarity with socio-economic context of one or more of IDB regions.
  • Fluency in English is essential; proficiency in Arabic and French is highly desirable.
